Year 3 News

Inquiry

This term, Year 3 students are diving into an engaging and meaningful design process project as part of our inquiry unit, “How the World Works.” Building on their previous research from the “Sharing the Planet” unit, students will focus on designing innovative products aimed at helping to protect endangered species.

Throughout this project, students will follow a structured design process, which includes defining a problem, brainstorming ideas, creating prototypes, testing their designs, and reflecting on their work. This hands-on approach not only fosters creativity but alsoa encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Project Goals:

Understanding Endangered Species: Students will revisit the endangered species they studied and consider the unique challenges these animals face.

Designing Solutions: Using their research, students will brainstorm and sketch ideas for products that can aid in the protection of these species.

Prototyping: Each student will create a prototype to represent their design idea, allowing them to explore materials and construction methods.

Reflection and Improvement: After testing their prototypes, students will reflect on their designs, considering what worked well and what could be improved.

This project will run until the end of the term, providing ample time for exploration and creativity. We are excited to see how our Year 3 students will channel their passions for wildlife conservation into practical solutions that could one day make a difference in the world.

Parents are encouraged to support their children during this exciting journey by discussing ideas at home and helping them gather materials for their prototypes. Together, we can inspire our young learners to become mindful stewards of our planet and its precious species!

Stay tuned for updates as our students progress through this remarkable project!

Maths

Exploring Chance and Probability!

Year 3 students are having a blast playing games that involve chance and probability! They are enjoying classics like Greedy Pig, Heads and Tails, and Beetle

Through these engaging activities, students are learning about random outcomes and likelihood while developing their mathematical skills in a fun way. It's been exciting to see their enthusiasm and curiosity as they explore these key concepts in a hands-on manner!

4 Cube Houses Challenge

Year 3 revised their understanding of flips, slides and turns and then completed the 4 Cube House / Architect Puzzle challenge. They creatively explored combinations of 4 blocks to form various house shapes where each design needed to be unique and not include any cantilevered floors. When complete, they attempted isometric drawings to visually represent their designs. This hands-on activity enhanced their spatial awareness and encouraged innovative thinking as they experimented with different configurations.

Swimming Lessons

Students have demonstrated impressive independence, showcasing excellent behaviour on the bus by being respectful to the driver and each other. Their polite manners have made each ride enjoyable.

Additionally, students have taken great responsibility for their belongings, ensuring that their swim gear and personal items are organized and accounted for. This growth in independence is truly commendable, and we appreciate your support at home in reinforcing these important values.
