Unit Of Inquiry
How we express ourselves: “People express themselves through stories”.
As part of this unit, the Year One students looked at how you can express yourself through drawing. They studied a variety of wordless picture story books and shared their opinions on what they thought the stories were about. They enjoyed learning about the different perspectives of their classmates.
The students were then asked to think of a simple story. They drew their story using only pictures and then asked a partner to tell them what they thought the story was about. The students wrote the story to match their picture and shared with the class.
Once there were two cousins and they went to the beach. They went for a swim but when they looked back a few minutes later, their mums and dads were gone. They built a sandcastle and found that they could play in the water together. They lived happily ever after.

Once upon a time there was a girl named Eliza. She climbed up a tree then she fell off the tree. She had broken her arm! She was sad because at first nobody believed her. Luckily her teacher was watching, so they went to the doctor, and she got plaster on her arm. She couldn’t play with her friends, so she had a little rest.

A little while ago, me and my family came to Australia to live. Me and my family came from South Africa, and it took one and a half days to get here. My favourite part about the trip was seeing sea animals like crabs and octopus. I loved it!

Once upon a time there was a girl named Frankie and she did not know what shapes were. She didn’t know which shape was which. The teacher didn’t know, so she didn’t know to teach her more. She told the teacher, and she finally got extra homework. She knew the shapes in no time. One day there was a different girl named Abby. She did not know what shapes were either, so Frankie taught her, and they turned out to be friends. They lived happily ever after.

The students have had many opportunities throughout this unit to express themselves through performance. They have enjoyed practicing their fluency and expression by acting out many of the stories including the Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs. They even attempted to act out Dreamtime stories such as The Rainbow Serpent and Tiddalik the Frog, without using any words.
Another form of expression explored throughout this unit has been writing. The students were asked to share their perspective about good and evil when discussing fairy tale characters. They wrote persuasive arguments to convince their audience to take on their point of view about whether Goldilocks and the Big Bad Wolf were good or evil. They made some excellent arguments including:
The wolf is bad because:
he ate the pigs
the police were chasing him
he lied
he blew the little pigs houses down
he didn’t say sorry
he wasn’t using his manners
he was very cheeky
Goldilocks is good because:
she knocked on the door
she couldn’t resist the porridge because she was hungry
she got lost and knocked on the door to ask for help
she was tired so she sat on the chairs
she didn’t mean to break the chair
Goldilocks is bad because:
she went to the woods without permission
she knew she was in the bears house but she just wanted to ruin it
she wiggled and wiggled so that Baby Bear’s chair would break
she ate the porridge
she wasn’t invited but she went into the house anyway
Student Action
Thank you to all of the students who have embraced our unit of inquiry ‘People express themselves through stories' and have brought stories from home to share with the class. Some students have even written and illustrated books of their own to share. Well done Year Ones!
