Exploring Imagination Through Harris Burdick’s Mysteries
Our Year 6 students have been diving deep into the world of creative writing, drawing inspiration from the enigmatic illustrations of Harris Burdick. These illustrations, known for their intriguing and mysterious qualities, have provided a rich canvas for our budding writers to craft their own captivating stories.
In this special feature, we’re showcasing the process our students followed to create their stories. Each student selected one of Burdick's evocative images, analysed its elements, and developed an imaginative narrative.
Here are some glimpses into some of the student's creative process.
Under the Rug
Greg lived in a small cottage. He was all alone because his daughter died two years ago and ever since he has been very sad.
Wack!
Two weeks later it happened again.
Lately Greg has been seeing movement under the rug. The little thing under the rug annoys Greg, so when the thing under the rug comes back Greg grabs the closest chair and he tries to wack it.
“Hi I’m Meep, I live under the rug in Greg’s house. Well actually I used to live above the rug in Greg’s house in his daughter’s room (I was her favourite toy) but then she died two years ago, and I came to life. Now I live under the rug in Greg’s house. Me and Greg have lots of fun I run around under the rug and Greg tries to hit me, it’s like our version of whack a mole (I always win).”

Missing In Venice
SUNKEN
As Jill boarded the massive ocean liner, she thought something didn’t feel right. She tried to brush it off and just try to enjoy their time on this giant cruise. Bobaiathon slid his arm over Jill’s shoulder, Tina gave her a friendly little nudge, and they were off.
Jill and tina had been partying their hearts out all night long. Bobaiathon didn’t come. He said that he would rather stay in their cabin and read. Jill was the responsible one so she didn’t go too crazy but Tina was as crazy as a headless chook. Jill checked her watch and noticed that midnight was seeping in. She struggled to get Tina back to the cabin but once she did, she found Bobaiathon asleep in bed with his book open on top of his head. She carefully removed the book from Bobaiathons head slid the bookmark in and placed it down on the bedside table. She hopped into bed to and so did Tina. They fell asleep within seconds.
