Child Safe Standard 4

Families and Communities Are Involved in Promoting Child Safety and Wellbeing

What does this mean?

Schools and organisations work together with families, carers and communities to help keep children and young people safe.

Families are important partners in creating environments where children feel respected, listened to and protected.

What Families Should Expect

Families should be able to:

  • Feel welcomed and respected
  • Know how the school keeps children safe
  • Understand child safety policies and processes
  • Raise concerns safely and confidently
  • Be listened to seriously and respectfully
  • Access information in ways they can understand
  • Participate in school life and decision-making where appropriate

What This Looks Like in Practice

Communication

The school:

  • Shares child safety information regularly
  • Explains reporting and complaint processes clearly
  • Provides updates through newsletters, meetings and online platforms

Partnerships

The school:

  • Encourages family involvement
  • Values parent and caregiver feedback
  • Builds respectful relationships with families and communities

Inclusion

The school:

  • Supports diverse families and cultures
  • Uses accessible communication methods
  • Considers language, disability, cultural and community needs

Speaking Up

Families can:

  • Ask questions about child safety
  • Report concerns without fear
  • Expect concerns to be taken seriously
  • Access support when needed

Why This Standard Matters

Children are safest when:

  • Families and schools work together
  • Adults communicate openly
  • Children see trusted adults cooperating
  • Concerns are identified and addressed early

Strong partnerships help children feel:

  • Safe
  • Supported
  • Valued
  • Heard

Message from Ange,

Each month for the next ten months we will spotlight each of the 11 Child Safety Standards. MACS has developed resources  to support a deepened understanding of the standards for parents and teachers and how they help support the safety of each child.

If you have any feedback as to how we can further support upholding standard 4 or what we are already doing well, please email angela.flint@smnthmelbourne.catholic.edu.au
