Year 5/6 News

The term has started off strong for Year 5/6 with a lot of sport, learning, camp and fun! Today, we are going to share with you a few of the exciting things we have been doing!
Cross Country
Earlier this term, the Year 3-6 students participated in the HOLT Cross Country. All St Anthony's students tried their hardest and represented St Anthony's beautifully.
Here is what Benjamin had to say:
Cross-country was a fun but tiring experience. When we arrived at Boldhill Park, there were so many people! There were seven schools, and each school had their own tent. Once we sat down, the person organising the event told us to listen. She told us where we were going to start the race, which was at a yellow line. Only years 3-6 competed, and the year 3-4 boys went first. I cheered my fellow teammates!! When it was my turn, I was nervous. I ran my best and came 20th overall. It was a great experience and lots of fun.
Soccer Lightning Premiership
In the first week of term, some of our Year 5/6 students and a couple of Year Fours went to the Soccer Lightning Premiership. It was a day full of surprises, excitement and effort. We started the day by getting in the maxi taxi. When we got there, we started to put on our soccer gear for our first game. When we started, it was hard, and we didn’t score a goal, but we still tried our best. All our games were hard, but it was not about winning; it was about trying our hardest, and that is what we did.
We really enjoyed the day, and we all had so much fun! It was a great experience to play a sport we haven’t played much, and we enjoyed getting to play the other schools in our district. A big thank you to Mrs Di Camillo and Mr Ru for coming with us and supporting us through the day.
Interschool Sports
During Term Two, the Year 5/6s are doing inter-school sports. Inter-school sport is a fun way to be active and try new things. The 5s and 6s have the option to play Footy (AFL 9s), Netball or BOTH! During the inter-school sports time, the children play these sports with other schools in a friendly competition. We learn to adapt, grow and learn by finding new ways to play or different strategies.
This year, all the schools are playing AFL 9s. This is safer, but still as fun and energetic as before. There are a couple of differences from normal AFL, for example. There is NO tackling. This rule is obviously made to protect children from getting injured, since even though the game is meant to give you an adrenaline rush, we can still make it safe. Instead of tackling, a tapping rule is implemented. The rule goes that the first tap by an opponent means you need to get rid of the ball before the second tap; otherwise, they get the ball. Also, they or you have to give them a little time to get rid of the ball. Another thing is the placement of the people on the field; there are three forwards, three midfielders, and three backs. Also, only forwards can score, which means the mids and the backs can’t.
We have enjoyed learning the new rules of AFL 9s, and we are enjoying learning to play netball too. We will play 5 friendly games, then in Week 8 we will have our lightning premiership days where we get to show everything we have learnt.
Literature Circles
This term we have started Literature Circles!
For literature circles we are split into five groups, and each group has a book they need to read. Each week we are given a certain amount of pages to read, and a role to complete.
The Roles Are:
Summariser
Passage Finder
Questioner
Clarifier
Predictor
Every week you will have a different job and you need to be ready to share with your group!
The books we are reading this term are:
Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief
Holes
The Grandest Bookshop in the World
A Place called Perfect
The Last Wild
We are all really enjoying our books so far and like being able to talk to our group about what is happening and what we think will happen next! This is a great way for us to read different books to what we might normally choose!
CAMP!!
Last week, the 5/6’s went to The Summit for camp!
We did a lot of different activities, but my favourite activities were… The Giant Swing because I faced my fears and had a good time! The High Wire because I pushed myself to do my best! Abseiling because it felt like I was a spy! And The Flying Fox because I faced my fears!!
When we were at the activities and were not on them, we usually had to help do something like… when we were on the High Wire we had to hold the rope that the person that was on the High Wire was connected too, and when we were at the Giant swing the people that were not on the Giant swing, they had to pull up the two people that were on the Giant Swing! [It was really heavy!!]
At camp there were two people that ran our activities, they were really kind people that taught us about stepping outside our comfort zones! [Stepping outside your comfort zone means that you are doing something that you don't usually do or something you might be a little bit scared to do!]
The Summit was the best camp I’ve ever been to, and I really want to go back!!

Last week we went to camp at The Summit. I LOVED every single thing we did there, especially the activities when you had to wear a harness. My four favourite activities are the giant swing, rock climbing, high wire, and flying fox. The giant swing at The Summit is the tallest one in Victoria.
When I went on the giant swing, I got to the top with Sammy, and the drop was so much fun. The rock climbing was so fun, and I went to the top and rang the bell. The highwire was the first thing we did in my group and I did the activity with Sammy. My favourite bit of the highwire was when Sammy and I were on the tightrope and we dabbed each other up. I really want to do the tightrope again. The flying fox was so calming, we flew over a lake, and it had an amazing view.
In every single one (except the flying fox), we had to put trust in each other. There are four people doing it, our three classmates are the people who are controlling the rope and the 1 classmate who is doing it. On the high wire, I kept on looking down at the three people because I didn't trust the people that much, but then I got comfortable and did it easy peasy.
We also did the bush course, Mud course, Laser skirmish, inflatable foosball, and an inflatable obstacle course. In the obstacle course, we got timed, and I got 19 seconds. Joseph was the fastest because he got 18 seconds.
The class was split into two groups. We got to name our group, and we called our group The Bobs. The other group called them the Blah Blah Blah’s.
We watched one of my favourite movies, Shrek 2 and did a talent show. There was a ping-pong table, so we got to play some games of ping-pong.
On the way home, I was tired and sad because I loved those activities, but I was so excited to see my dog and family again!

The Summit staff also wrote a little blog report of our camp. Have a read here:
KidsView Social Justice Day
On Wednesday, 13 May, our wonderful Year 5/6 students participated in the inspiring KidsView Social Justice Conference.
Led by youth ambassadors from Bahay Tuluyan, our seniors explored critical issues surrounding global poverty, children's rights, and active citizenship. Through powerful first-hand stories and interactive workshops, the conference challenged our young leaders to think globally and act locally.
We are incredibly proud of how our Year 5/6 students engaged with these complex topics, demonstrating deep empathy, open hearts, and a strong commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Stay tuned for the student-led justice initiatives launching soon across our school community!
