In Our Classrooms

Prep Overview
Over the past two weeks, the Prep students have been exploring patterns in Mathematics. They have been identifying, creating and continuing repeating patterns using a variety of materials, colours, shapes and movements. Students have enjoyed investigating different types of patterns and explaining the rules that make a pattern repeat. Through hands-on activities and games, they have developed their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills while having fun learning about patterns!
Milo Monkey's Birthday
On Wednesday, the Prep students celebrated Milo Monkey's Birthday as part of our Little Learners Love Literacy program. This exciting milestone marks the completion of learning all 26 letters of the alphabet! Students came dressed as a Little Learners Love Literacy character or an animal beginning with the same letter as their chosen character and proudly participated in a Milo Monkey Character Parade, showcasing their wonderful costumes. Throughout the day, students enjoyed a variety of fun birthday themed activities that reinforced their learning while celebrating this special achievement.
It was a wonderful celebration of the students' hard work and learning throughout the year so far! Happy Birthday Milo!
Year 1 Overview
Our Year 1 students have been diving into some exciting learning this term. In Mathematics, they have been exploring patterns and skip counting, learning to recognise, continue and create their own repeating and growing pattern sequences. These hands‑on tasks have strengthened their understanding of number relationships and supported them as they moved into learning about money and applying their skip‑counting skills.
Year 2 Overview
Over the last few weeks, Year 2 have been exploring money through a range of hands-on learning experiences and real-life problem-solving activities. Through the use of play money, classroom shopping tasks and collaborative discussions, students have developed their understanding of how money is used in everyday situations.
Students have practised recognising and counting different coin values, making amounts in a variety of ways, calculating the total cost of items and working out change from purchases. They have also explored how to make sensible spending choices by working within a budget and comparing the costs of different items.
A highlight of our learning was a birthday party planning project, where students were given a budget and needed to select party supplies while keeping track of their spending. This provided opportunities for students to apply their addition and subtraction skills in a meaningful context and begin using repeated addition and multiplication strategies when solving money problems involving multiple items.
Throughout this time, students have been encouraged to explain their thinking, share their strategies and justify their answers. These discussions have helped strengthen both their mathematical reasoning and communication skills. By connecting mathematics to real-world experiences, students are developing confidence in using money and building important skills that will support them in everyday life.
Outstanding Effort at Division Cross Country!
On Thursday 4th June, a dedicated group of 10 students proudly represented Hazel Glen College at the Division Cross Country Round. Each of these competitors had earned their place after qualifying through a fantastic performance at the previous District Round.
All of our runners competed with immense determination, pushing themselves to their absolute limits on the day. More importantly, they brilliantly demonstrated our College values, showing excellent sportsmanship, respect, and support for one another from start to finish.
A special congratulations goes out to the three students who placed exceptionally well and have officially qualified to progress to the next round of competition:
- Evelyn A
- Elora R
- Macy D
We are incredibly proud of the efforts of all 10 participants who represented HGC so beautifully. Best of luck to Evelyn, Elora, and Macy as they move forward to the next stage!
Year 5 Overview
It has been a fantastic few weeks for our Year 5 mathematicians! We’ve officially made the jump from multiplication into the world of division, and it has been great to see students using what they know about times tables to crack division codes. We began with some mental division strategies and explored divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, and 5, which helped students quickly figure out how numbers can be shared equally. Year 5 students have also been working hard on balancing number sentences. They’ve been finding missing numbers to keep equations equal, while some have even started using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols (>, <, =) to compare their answers. Whether they are mastering the steps of short division or tackling tricky real-life problems, the progress has been wonderful to see.
To finish off the term, we are moving on to some hands-on learning with measurement!
Life Ed Incursion Year 5 and 6
Our Year 5 and 6 students recently took part in the Welcome to Puberty session with the Life Ed team and it was a really positive learning experience. During the session, students learned about the changes that happen as we grow up, including how our bodies, feelings and friendships can change over time. They explored ways to look after themselves, stay healthy, communicate with trusted adults and ask for help when they need it. Students also learned about personal hygiene and how to manage new responsibilities as they get older. The session was engaging, informative and helped students feel more confident and prepared for the changes ahead.
Year 4 and 5 Kids Help Line Incursions
Our Year 4 and 5 students recently took part in an online incursion with Kids Helpline, and it was a really positive and engaging learning experience. Students explored how to stay safe online and how to make respectful and kind choices when using technology and online sites. They learned about understanding their own online boundaries, respecting the boundaries of others and communicating clearly and politely.
The session also helped students think about what to do if something online makes them feel unsure or uncomfortable, including the importance of reporting concerns to safe, trusted people in their lives. Overall, the session supported students to feel more confident, responsible and prepared when navigating their online world.
Year 6 Overview
A large focus this term for our Year 6 cohort has centred on measurement. We have been busy identifying and converting different units of measurement, such as centimetres into metres and grams into kilograms.
We have been exploring and experimenting with angles and area, with a focus on accurate measurements and creative thinking. We began by learning the different classifications of angles, before moving on to using a protractor to accurately measure angles.
Students then began exploring complementary and supplementary angles, which led them into their maths learning task – Designing their own mini-golf course.
After putting their creativity and maths knowledge to work on their mini-golf courses, students began learning about area and perimeter. Students were able to put their skills and knowledge of perimeter, area, regular and irregular polygons to work when they designed their own dream backyard.
