Maggie Dent Visits GSG

We were delighted this week to welcome Maggie Dent to our school for a discussion with Mr Bryce McLean and Mr Jordan Owenell about shaping our Year Nine Rites of Passage Program. Maggie, an Albany local, is a respected expert in raising adolescents and has authored numerous books, as well as worked with schools and communities across Australia to share her knowledge and experience.

At GSG, we are currently piloting a Rites of Passage program aimed at empowering our Year Nine students as they transition towards adulthood. It was incredibly valuable to spend time with Maggie and to learn from her extensive experience as we continue to develop this important program.

Maggie will also be presenting a public seminar this weekend at Australian Christian College on the topic of “Girlhood.”

Interschool Cross Country

This week, GSG proudly hosted the Great Southern Secondary Schools Sport Association (GSSSSA) Interschool Cross Country. With our beautiful campus, it was no surprise that GSG was selected as the host venue.

We are extremely proud of our team for the positive attitude they brought to the race and the way they supported one another throughout the day. Our school team achieved an outstanding result, taking out the overall win.

While we celebrated several individual champions, the key to our success was our strong squad depth, with every student giving their best effort and GSG achieving a high number of top‑20 finishes across each year group.

Walk to School Day

Next Wednesday 13 May is Walk to School Day. We hope our Secondary students will accompany our Primary School students on a walk to school from Coraki Park. The walk will commence at 8.00am, and we would love to see our Secondary students supporting this event.

All students who participate in the walk will be rewarded with a warm milo and a muffin. Students are welcome to bring their school bags to Coraki Park, where they will be transported by bus to the school and available for collection from the Library.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to connect and build relationships across the school.

National Boarding Week

Next week, we celebrate National Boarding Week! A range of activities organised by our boarders will take place, providing the broader school community with insight into life as a boarder at GSG.

Walk to School Day is traditionally well supported by our boarders and this year it also provides a great opportunity for our Primary School students to support National Boarding Week by walking to school alongside a boarder.

Throughout the week, we will also hold a special assembly, afternoon teas in the boarding house, and a lunch in the dining hall for special guests. On Wednesday, we are encouraging Secondary students to come to school dressed as a farmer to join in the spirit of the week.

 Red Moort Camp

On Sunday 3 May, the Year Eleven Art and Literature class travelled to Red Moort Reserve in Boxwood Hill. Along the way, we met Noongar Elder Auntie Carol Pettersen, who spoke to us about the energy lines in the land and the importance of connection to Country.

Once we arrived at Red Moort Reserve, we went for a walk around the area and completed sketches of what we observed to gather inspiration for our main artworks. On 4 May, we woke up and began painting straight away. Our task was to create a painting of a figure within a landscape, incorporating what we had learned from Auntie Carol about connection to land.

Overall, the camp was a great experience. We all had an enjoyable time and learned a lot about the land and its significance.
