National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week

National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week are important opportunities for our school community to learn about Australia’s shared histories, reflect on the past, and continue building respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

National Sorry Day, recognised on May 26th, acknowledges the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impacts that past government policies have had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities. Throughout the week, students will participate in age-appropriate learning experiences and discussions that promote understanding, empathy, and respect.

National Reconciliation Week will run from May 27th to June 3rd and this year’s theme is All In. The theme encourages all Australians to recognise that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility and that we all have a role to play in creating a more inclusive and respectful future.

Across the school, students will take part in a range of activities designed to explore the meaning of reconciliation and how we can all contribute positively to our community. Classes will engage in discussions and activities around what it means to be “All In” for reconciliation, with students creating either class or individual pledges that reflect ways they can show respect, inclusion, and understanding in their everyday lives.

The RAP Team will also be running a whole-school colouring competition inspired by this year’s theme. The competition will be launched at assembly, with members of the RAP Team visiting junior classrooms to help introduce the activities and explain the importance of Reconciliation Week.

We look forward to seeing our students engage thoughtfully in these important conversations and celebrations throughout the week.

Kind regards,

The RAP Team
