Grade 1 & 2
Term 2 - Week 6
It has been a very busy Term 2, with lots of learning and activities throughout.
We celebrated Mother’s Day beautifully with a shared lunch, followed by a liturgy. This was a very special day and enjoyed by all.
In Week 4 the children studied Persuasive Text in Literacy. We read the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’, which is a series of letters that each colour crayon wrote, arguing why they needed to quit. When the students came in from recess, they found that their pencils and glue sticks had left them a letter explaining, arguing, why they quit. The students then shared why they should or shouldn’t come back, giving three reasons why. The children thoroughly enjoyed this. We have also read other stories including ‘I Will Never Not Ever Eat A Tomato’ (which led to writing letters to mum and dad explaining why we shouldn’t eat certain foods and taste testing food that we don’t usually eat) and ‘I Am Not Sleepy and I Will Not Go To Bed’,

In Religious Education, the concept for this term is ‘Participation’. We live in a community with others, growing together. We are called to be active participants in all that we do. In Week 5 we learned about the ‘Laudato Si’. Pope Francis wrote an Encyclical (letter) on caring for our common home. This letter was called ‘Laudato Si’. It invites Catholics to listen and respond together to the cry of creation. This year the theme for this is ‘From Hope to Action’. We hope for a better world, to care for our world and the land we all share. We, all of us, can participate and do something to help solve our problems- daily choices, community life, prayer and concrete acts of care. Our students gave examples on ways they can participate and act.
Our Inquiry unit for this term is ‘How do the choices I make today impact my future?’ Following on from the Laudato Si, we are learning about how we can ‘be the voice of change and make a difference to the world.’ We can make a difference by making sure we ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’. Our students became very good Litter Pirates helping clean our school, and they are very good at reusing and recycling (especially during Discovery Centre time).

This week we celebrated Catholic Education Week. It began with Pentecost Sunday, followed by National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday with the story called ‘Luna Roo, The Kangaroo Baller’ and then a Mass on Wednesday afternoon.
It has been an amazing four weeks and we look forward to our next four weeks and the exciting activities ahead of us.
