Teaching with Heart

Teaching is more than a profession, it is a vocation, a calling grounded in care, connection, and community. At St Patrick’s, this calling is deeply enriched by the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, which guide our educators in nurturing not only the minds but also the hearts and souls of our students.

These gifts; wisdom, understanding, right judgement, courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder and awe are evident in the daily interactions and practices of our staff. In speaking with teachers, it is clear that these spiritual gifts are intentionally woven into their teaching. They create safe, inclusive spaces where students feel heard and respected, modelling empathy and integrity in every conversation.

  • Wisdom is shown in the way teachers help students see beyond the surface, encouraging deeper thinking and reflection.

  • Understanding is present in their ability to meet students where they are, recognising individual needs and responding with compassion.

  • Right Judgement is offered through gentle guidance, helping students make thoughtful choices and navigate challenges.

  • Courage shines through their resilience and commitment, especially during demanding times.

  • Knowledge is shared generously, not just through curriculum, but through life lessons and moral guidance.

  • Reverence is reflected in their reverence for the dignity of each student and their dedication to service.

  • Wonder and awe inspires humility and a sense of purpose, reminding us that teaching is a sacred trust.

Beyond the classroom, I’ve had the privilege of observing our staff in action, on the playground, at the bus lines, and during lessons. What stands out is the genuine warmth and attentiveness they show to students. Whether it’s a quiet check-in with a student who looks unsettled, a shared laugh during a game, or a calm, respectful conversation in a moment of challenge, our staff consistently demonstrate what it means to teach with heart and spirit.

It’s often said that people don’t go into teaching for the money and that couldn’t be more true. The passion, dedication, and selflessness I’ve witnessed among our staff is inspiring. They show up each day not just to teach, but to make a difference. Their commitment to student wellbeing, growth, and success is evident in every interaction, every lesson, and every moment of care.

To our dedicated staff: THANK YOU for sharing your gifts so generously. You embody the spirit of St Patrick's and the values of Edmund Rice. Your work is seen, valued, and deeply appreciated.
