Junior Years - Term 4 - Weeks 5 & 6

Foundation

In Literacy, we have been revising our sound-symbol correspondences for all the letters of the alphabet as well as letter names. We have also been focussing on reading and saying sentences with our new tricky words ‘could’, ‘would’ and ‘should’. We have been revising our tricky words, by looking, saying, writing and checking the spelling of the words.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about ordinal numbers. The students have been working on identifying the order that objects and people are positioned in comparison to other things. For example, who came 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the race. We have been practising writing these ordinal numbers.

In Religion, our topic is, ‘Celebrating Jesus’ Birth’. The students have been learning about what it means to prepare and wait for something special as we lead into the Liturgical Season of Advent.

In Inquiry our topic is, 'How did that work?’.  We have been exploring how materials change when heated or cooled, or how materials change when mixed with other materials. The students enjoyed making jelly, learning the process of changing a liquid to a solid.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night.
  • Practice reading and writing tricky words found in the back of the Home Reading Diary.
  • Practice handwriting lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Practice writing these sentences...

We have been to the park.

What will you do today?

I can see the small ship in the bay.

The ducks swam in the big pond.

Please encourage your child to sound out the words when possible

The circle is 4th in line

The squares are 1st and 5th in the line

Year One

In Literacy, we are reviewing suffixes (s, ing and ed), the bossy “e” in words and words with more than one syllable.  We have been focusing on spelling our tricky words: always, know, open, another, water, other.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about two- and three-dimensional shapes. We have sorted different two-dimensional shapes according to the number of sides and vertices. We have been exploring the different 3D shapes in the environment and the features of these shapes such as edges and faces.

In Religion our topic is ‘Our call to Mission’. The students explored how to care for creation and discussed ways we could look after our environment.

In Inquiry our topic is, 'How did that work?’.  We have been exploring how materials change when heated or cooled, or how materials change when mixed with other materials.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night.
  • Practice spelling our tricky words (always, know, open, another, water, other) and writing them in sentences.
  • Practice handwriting on dotted thirds lines.

Complete the maths below...

Find and draw 2D shapes found at home and discuss the features (number of sides and vertices) of these shapes with a family member.

Example:

A rectangle for the T.V has 4 sides and 4 vertices (corners).

Year Two

In Literacy, we have been revising and practising spelling tricky words.

We have been reviewing digraph and trigraph blends used in words to make one sound such as “ch” or “tch”. In Grammar, we have focused on present, past or future tense and how words change depending on the tense used. We have been practising using the strategies learnt to comprehend the passages of text and answering literal and inferred questions about these texts.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about location and patterns. We have been creating maps from models.  We have explored skip counting by increasing or decreasing numbers by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s and 10s to identify patterns created.

  • Practice spelling our tricky words (believe, saw, before, women)
  • Listening to your child read their reader each night.
  • Asking questions about the story they read.
  • Ask if the story they have read is written in past, present or future tense.

Complete the maths below...

  • Draw a map of a room at home or backyard using a legend (key) with simple shapes to represent things.
  • Practise skip counting by increasing or decreasing by a given number and look for patterns with the numbers.
