Learning in Action

🧠 Word Work

Over the past fortnight, the students have continued to explore the morphemes ‘mit’, 'miss', and 'mise', meaning to send. They have been exploring the meanings of ‘strue’ and ‘struct,' which mean ‘to build.’ For each of these focuses, the students have read and spelt some words while also identifying and explaining the meaning of their morphemes.

🗣️ Vocabulary of the Week

In year 6, we’ve been looking at the meaning of these words:

Demise:  de + mise = away + send (to be sent away)

The demise of something is its death (a person’s demise is when they are ‘sent away’ from the ‘world of living people’).

Surmise: sur + mise = upon + send (to ‘send’ a guess upon something)

If you surmise that something is true, you make a good guess about it without being absolutely sure you are right.

Literature: Kensuke's Kingdom

Kensuke's Kingdom is about Michael, an eleven-year-old boy whose parents decide to sail around the world after his dad loses his job. They buy a yacht called Peggy Sue and set off on an incredible adventure together. At first, everything feels exciting. Michael learns to sail, sees amazing places, and even gets a dog named Stella Artois. But life at sea isn’t always easy. The long days and isolation start to wear on them, and Michael sometimes misses home. One night, during a storm while his parents are below deck, Michael falls overboard with Stella. When he wakes up, he finds himself washed up on a strange tropical island. He’s scared, hungry, and alone, but soon realises someone mysterious is watching him. This marks the beginning of his survival journey, and the secret friendship that will change his life forever.

Through reading Kensuke's Kingdom, students are looking at dependent and independent clauses, learning how each type of clause contributes to strong, well-structured sentences. They are also being exposed to new vocabulary to enhance their understanding of the novel, helping them deepen their comprehension, build richer interpretations, and strengthen their overall language skills.

➗ Maths: Daily Review, Tessellations & Transformations

Students will revise concepts they have learnt throughout the year. This includes recent concepts of percentages, as well as converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. As part of review, students will work on their number fluency to be more efficient when multiplying and dividing.

Over the past fortnight in Mathematics, our students have been exploring the fascinating world of tessellations. We investigated how shapes can fit together without gaps or overlaps to create repeating patterns. Students experimented with a range of shapes and discovered how to reflect, rotate, and translate them to form creative, complex designs.

It has been wonderful to see the students use both problem-solving and artistic skills as they created their own tessellated patterns.

Preview:

Over the next fortnight, we will begin our conversion unit in Mathematics. Students will explore how to measure and compare different units of length and mass, and learn how to convert between them. This unit will help build their confidence in using measurement in real-life situations.

Scrapbooking

Students have been working on their scrapbooks, and it has been lovely to see the enthusiasm they bring to each session. Most students have now completed the reflective writing about their primary school years, and they are busily adding creative touches to personalise every page.

From photos and drawings to decorative layouts, each scrapbook is becoming a unique snapshot of their time in primary school. We are incredibly proud of the effort they are putting in; these books will be something special for them to treasure and look back on for many years to come.
