Learning in Action

📖 Literacy

Reading & Writing

This fortnight in writing we explored editing passages for consistent tense. Tense indicates the time of an action or state of being and is usually expressed in verbs. We also began to look at generating complex sentences using relative clauses. There were a few tricky rules for relative clauses to remember, but students are already getting the hang of these, and will continue to focus more on these over the next fortnight.

Word Work

This fortnight, students finished look at the Latin base dic/dict, which means say, tell or proclaim. Students showcased their knowledge by creating as many words as possible using dic/dict and a range of prefixes and suffixes.

Students learnt about the Greek base ge, which means Earth, and explored words such as geothermal, geometric, and geography. They also began to focus on the Latin base verse/vert, which means turn.

Students will continue to explore the Latin base verse/vert, including discussing how prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of the root. They will then apply this understanding when reading and writing new vocabulary.

Next fortnight we will begin our new Literature unit on Flood by Jackie French, exploring narrative features and structures. Students will also start work on their Buddy Books; something they are all extremely excited for!

➗ Maths

In Maths this fortnight students have continued to explore decimals. They have written and ordered decimals, and placed these on number lines. Students partitioned numbers up to two decimal places and wrote both the standard and non-standard expanded form. It was wonderful to see students make the connection between their prior learning about fractions, and how these link to decimals.

Students also began their applied unit on angles. They have looked at naming and comparing a range of angles, including acute, right, obtuse and reflex.

Students will finish their angles unit next week, before beginning their unit on money. They will review Australian notes and coins, and use their prior knowledge of decimals to add and subtract dollar amounts and find change.

🧠 Knowledge-Rich Units

Grade 4 students are absolutely loving learning about the history of the Vikings in our Knowledge-Rich Unit. This fortnight we discovered what it means to 'go a-viking' and what it tells us about the viking way of life. It was particularly interesting to learn about the Viking longships and how they used these to transport goods and people across vast distances. Students were especially interested to learn that the design for these longships began as something similar to a canoe. As the students all had the chance to go on a canoe at Grade 4 camp, they could well and truly say that it wouldn't be much fun to get stuck on one in the middle of the ocean with no cabins to protect you from the waves and rain! Those Viking warriors must have been tough! We also began to learn about famous Vikings, such as Eric the Red and Leif Eriksson.
