Learning in Action
đ Literacy
This fortnight, students have continued to read âThe One and Only Ivanâ, responding to questions about the text to build their comprehension, along with focusing on specific words to build their vocabulary. In Sentence-Level Writing, students practised using the conjunctions because, but and so when writing their own sentences. Students also practised summarising chapters from our novel using the Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) structure to support them. Students continued reading informative texts about circus animals and their treatment, and practised their note-taking skills. They then used these notes to plan and draft their persuasive letter body paragraphs, following a new structure, PEPS (point, explanation, proof and summary). This structure supported students in making a clear point in their topic sentence and guided them with what their supporting details should include.

Over the next fortnight, students will conclude their reading of âThe One and Only Ivanâ. They will continue writing their persuasive letter, moving on to their conclusions and revising their piece. In Sentence-Level Writing, students will practise combining independent and dependent clauses to create complex sentences. They will also learn to write a summarising sentence for the main ideas within the text.Â
â Maths
This fortnight students completed two smaller units, with the first unit focussing on money, and the second unit focussing on angles. The first unit began by students learning how to make specific amounts, up to $5, out of coins. They built confidence around learning the different values of coins, and that the size of the coin does not indicate its value. Students used strategies such as skip counting and grouping to build different amounts. They also learnt how to calculate change and were able to practise this to build on their skills. In the second unit, students learnt about recognising angles as a measurement of turn. Students practised constructing right angles, and identifying angles smaller than and greater than a right angle.Â

Over the next fortnight, students will revise different addition and subtraction strategies. They will revise and practise previous strategies including the split strategy, jump strategy and vertical strategy through mixed problems and worksheet tasks.Â
đşď¸ Knowledge Rich Unit
Over the past fortnight, our Grade 3 students concluded their Birth of Democracy unit by completing an assessment that showcased their understanding of key concepts and learning from the term. This week, they were excited to begin our new unit, Movement of People Through History. Students were introduced to the concept of migration and examined a timeline that highlighted the journeys of early human migration across the world. They also explored the various reasons people may choose or be forced to move from one place to another. This included learning about push factors, such as war, limited access to healthcare, or natural disasters, as well as pull factors, like improved job prospects, safety, and greater educational opportunities.

Looking ahead, the Grade 3s will explore how early sea voyagers navigated and connected with new places. Students will also learn and describe the push/pull factors affecting movement through England and Western Europe during the Middle Ages.Â
Wellbeing
Students examined gender stereotypes more closely by brainstorming gifts they might buy for baby Rosewarne, considering both a boy and a girl. This sparked a rich discussion about the kinds of toys often marketed to different genders and how these differences can influence our thinking. Through this, students discovered that all children can enjoy a wide variety of toys - play does not need to depend on gender.Â

Looking ahead, Grade 3 students will be exploring what makes a healthy friendship. They will use the Friend-O-Meter to examine the qualities that help friendships thrive and discuss how to recognise when a friendship might not be so positive. Students will also reflect on their own values by recording the âMust-Havesâ they look for in a friend, for example, âthey must be funnyâ or âthey must like sports.â This learning encourages students to think deeply about kindness, respect and the importance of supportive relationships.Â
Â
If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting with your childâs teacher, please donât hesitate to get in touch via Compass.

Have a wonderful weekend,
