📖 Literacy

This week we started our new literature book ‘Tiddler.’ The students have been really engaged in the story and discussing the story map about the book. The Grade 2s have been focusing on many parts of the story including:

  • The characters and setting
  • Problems/Character feelings
  • Make a plan/Steps to the solution
  • Solution
  • Ending
  • Characters feelings at the end

In Sentence Level Writing we have started to identify ‘to be’ verbs in sentences and how to change them from present to past tense.

Preview: Over the next week we will be continuing ‘Tiddler’ and delving more into our comprehension of the characters and events. We will then be learning about Australia's sea creatures from a non fiction perspective.

In Sentence Level Writing we will focus on dependent and independent clauses in sentences.

Knowledge Rich

Over the last fortnight, the Grade 2s completed their final Knowledge Rich unit for the year. They learned that, in China, written characters are picture-symbols that represent whole words, compared to in English where we use 26 letters. We discussed how this makes learning to write in Chinese more challenging than in English. The students then explored important Chinese inventions such as paper, printing, gunpowder, and porcelain. In our final lesson, they discovered that silk was a closely guarded secret in ancient China because it was extremely valuable and only sold to the rich and powerful. They also enjoyed the fable of Queen Si Ling-chi, who discovered silk when a silkworm’s cocoon fell into her tea and unravelled into a strong, beautiful thread she learned to spin and weave.

As part of our Ancient China Knowledge Rich unit, the students participated in our virtual reality incursion. The students embarked on an exciting cultural journey as they travelled (virtually) along the Great Wall of China and uncovered the history of the Silk Road. They learnt about the Terracotta Army, and enjoyed a visit to a traditional shadow-puppet theatre to explore the Chinese Zodiac and discover the traits linked to their own birth year. The students ended the incursion by learning about the traditions, symbols and cultural significance of Chinese New Year.

➗ Maths

The students have now completed their unit on place value. The students learnt to round four digit numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, as well as apply their place value knowledge to solve problems by thinking about how many possibilities could be found.  For example, if I have 3 thousands blocks, 1 hundred blocks and 1 one block - how many different numbers can we make?

This week we have moved on to our shape unit. The students have learnt to name, identify and describe 2D shapes and to spot parallel lines. They also practised identifying and sorting regular and irregular polygons and classifying polygons based on their features.

Preview - Over the next fortnight we will complete our shape unit, by combining and splitting 2D shapes, creating and manipulating polygons and rotating shapes to create patterns.

😊Wellbeing

Over the past two weeks, students learned about respecting personal space and keeping their bodies safe. We talked about private body parts in a calm, age-appropriate way and reminded children that their body belongs to them. We introduced the No-Go-Tell strategy to help them know what to do if something ever feels unsafe: say no, move away, and talk to a trusted adult. Students practised recognising safe and unsafe situations through simple scenarios.

Our second lesson jumped back into Friendology, and focused on the idea of community, one of our school values. Students explored the different people who make up their school, home, and neighbourhood communities, and reflected on the strengths they each bring. We emphasised that every child plays an important part in helping our community feel connected, safe, and supportive. The students loved making a class community chain!
