📖 Literacy

This week in Literacy our Prep students have been busy exploring new sounds, stories, and creative activities. We have been learning about the sound “ough” and practising reading and writing sentences using the digraphs “ai ay” and “or aw.” For example: “I see stars in the dark.” Students have enjoyed practising these sounds in their reading and writing tasks.

We also concluded our literature study of The Gruffalo, which the students loved. As part of our learning they created their own imaginative monsters and wrote several descriptive sentences to bring their creatures to life. The excitement continued as students used a range of fun materials and papers to make a three dimensional version of their monster which led to some wonderful creativity.

Our new focus text is My Two Blankets, a beautiful story that encourages students to use inferential thinking and questioning skills. The story follows a young girl named Cartwheel who arrives in a new country and learns to find comfort in unfamiliar surroundings. Through this text students are beginning to talk about feelings, experiences, and the idea of adapting to change and being brave.

We are so proud of the enthusiasm and effort students are showing in their literacy learning.

➗ Maths

Our Prep students have been strengthening their number sense by exploring place value and practising counting confidently up to 100. This focus on number fundamentals is the foundation for an exciting new maths topic: Australian coins. Students have been identifying different coins, exploring their shapes, colours and values and putting their knowledge into practice by sorting coins and running their very own shop. Through playful shop scenarios, the children have been selecting ‘goods’, counting out pretend money and paying for their chosen items.

Preview: Next fortnight, students will revise ‘Time’ and long and short durations.

Wellbeing

This week in Wellbeing, students explored what it means to play in a fair and friendly way. They reviewed the rules of fair play used in popular games and discussed how boys and girls can play together or share space respectfully when playing nearby. Students also identified actions and words that show fairness and kindness, and reflected on how it feels when friends play in a friendly and fair way compared to when play becomes mean or too rough.

Preview: Over the next fortnight, students will learn about the importance of sharing play spaces and equipment. They will listen to different scenarios that take place both in the classroom and in the yard and identify whether the situations demonstrate friendly and fair behaviour.

Buddies

Our Prep and Grade 5 buddies had a wonderful time this week coming together for a cheerful, summer-inspired ice-cream craft! With plenty of cutting, tracing and pasting, our students were busy fine-tuning their fine-motor skills while creating the most colourful “scoops” of the season. There were lots of smiles, lots of glue, and just a little hope that these bright ice-creams might help bring the warmer weather our way!
