 TERM FOUR

WILD ACTION INCURSION

On Tuesday last week, the Foundations students were very lucky to have an incursion hosted by: Wild Action ‘The Zoo Comes to You’. We were lucky enough to have a variety of Australian animals visit our school for an exciting and interactive experience. The students were involved in a one hour animal education program run by the amazing Tilly. They had the opportunity to touch and hold various species, including mammals, reptiles, birds, and insects. This hands on activity was a great way to reinforce their understanding of biological classifications, habitats, and the importance of conservation.

The children learnt:

• Biological classification i.e. Phyla, Class, species.

• Coverings i.e. Fur, feathers, scales, eco-skeleton or glandular skin?

• Adaptations which enable it to survive.

• Habitat and environment in which it lives.

• Human impact on the environment.

• Diet. Predator vs. prey inter-relationships.

• Ecological Niche. After all …every animal has a job to do!

• Conservation of Threatened species

The children had the opportunity to touch or hold a stumpy tail lizard, an enormous lace monitor, a HUGE black headed python, a turtle, a green tree frog, a gecko, a sugar glider, a gorgeous baby wombat, a tiny joey and a tawny frog mouth!
