You matter. Unless you multiply yourself times the speed of light squared. Then you energy.

We’ve been busy in the Science room the last few weeks, learning about living things!

Year One and Year Two learning

A few weeks ago we managed to avoid the rain, and take our magnifying glasses outside to try and find a range of living things in our school environment. The students first had a go at predicting the living things we might see, they learnt to ask questions like, ‘Does it grow and change?’ ‘Does it need food and water to survive?’ to figure out if something is living or not. We then observed all the living things we could find. Not only did the students find what was on their list, but they found so much more! It was fun to be outside with the magnifying glasses!

We have recently expanded our knowledge on what living things need to survive, and had a look at the different types of environments and homes that different living things need, and why they can’t all live in the same types of environments.

Year Three/Four learning

Our YEar Three and Year Four students have enjoyed looking closely at a living thing of their choice, and learning all about what particular living thing needs to survive. They used the computers to research a living thing of their choice, and then completed a profile of their animal/plant/organism, including a labelled scientific drawing. I was so impressed with what they could find.

We have now moved on to looking at 'once-living things' and have started to learn about extinction and fossils!

Year Five/Six learning

Our Year Five and Year Six students have completed their infographic about living things in extreme environments, it’s hard to believe that there are some living things that thrive in the harshest of environments. The detail of learning and information from our students within this project was inspiring.

Our Year Five and Year Six students have just started to learn about light pollution – the difference between artificial and natural light, and how light affects some living things in a negative way. They are currently designing a poster to advertise why people should switch off unnecessary lights, and the linkages to looking after our environment.
