Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four
The past two weeks have certainly been busy! One of the biggest highlights was our incredible Year 5/6 trip to the Werribee Open Range Zoo — it was a wonderful day filled with learning, new experiences, and lasting memories.
Now, as we head into a well-deserved long weekend, we hope you all take this time to rest, recharge, and stay safe — we look forward to seeing everyone back, ready for the second half of Term 4 next Wednesday!
WERRIBEE ZOO EXCURSION
Last Thursday, we went on an incredible adventure to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. We took part in workshops about animal adaptations and features, where we examined different animal skulls and studied their teeth and size to work out if they were carnivores, omnivores, or herbivores. One of the highlights of the day was hopping onto the safari bus and heading out onto the savannah to see rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and many other animals up close. We also walked along the new Elephant Trail and were lucky enough to see several of the zoo’s newest elephants. It was a fantastic day filled with learning, laughter, and unforgettable experiences!

YEAR 5
Literacy: This fortnight in Literacy, we have concluded reading the text “Black Cockatoo”. We have really enjoyed this text and exploring the different text features throughout. We have now moved onto reading “Dirrarn” which is a book written by the same author and is the sequel of the “Black Cockatoo”. We are really enjoying this story and cannot wait to investigate it further.
Maths: This fortnight in Maths, we have been learning about fractions. We are split into different groups so that we are all catered for and challenged. Students have been identifying the different types of fractions which are presented to us via an image. We are really enjoying this topic and cannot wait to develop our skills and knowledge.
Inquiry: This fortnight for inquiry, we have explored different zoo animals. We are about to conduct a research project on an animal in which we were inspired by animals that we had seen at the Zoo. We are in the middle of planning our project and our end result will be a poster presentation.
Religion: In Religion, we have been exploring the different apparitions of Mary. We have been working in groups to explore these different apparitions. We have found out information about; the significance behind Mary, the impact she has had on us, where the apparition originated from. Soon, we will present our findings to our peers.
Special Events:
BUDDIES: This week we had buddies! We created an acrostic poem and decorated it with our buddies. We were all very creative and found so much enjoyment in this activity.
YEAR 6
Literacy: In English, the Year Sixes have been reading Once by Morris Gleitzmann. Since the entertaining story is set in Poland, they have been researching the nation of Poland to learn how to write an information report! To help with this, they have been practicing note-taking with symbols and have been creating nominalised sentences.
Maths: In Maths, we have been learning about data collection and representation. This includes differentiating categorical and numerical data, organising data into frequency tables and calculating percentage frequencies. Students created different types of graphs to represent data and communicate their findings.
Inquiry: In Inquiry, our Year Sixes have been studying animals and how their adaptations help them to thrive. To help understand this, the students visited Werribee Zoo, which was an educational experience, as they got to observe their chosen animal as well as consult with the experts. After they finish researching, they will make a creative project to present their animal and how they adapt to survive. We are very excited to see them!
Religion:Students have been learning about Mary as a part of Religion. They took a deep dive into the New Testament to learn more about Mary as a disciple and role model of faith and obedience. Students studied different scriptures on Mary and shared their insights as well as contributed to each other’s understanding of Mary.
Sun Smart
It's that time of year again when all students must wear a hat when outside. It is strongly suggested that the hat be a bucket style as this gives the best protection. School hats are available from the uniform shop. Please make sure your child's hat has their name on it. Students who do not have a hat will be asked to stay in the shade as we do have...
