Social Media Age Restrictions
From 10th December Australian young people under 16 will not be allowed to create or hold accounts on certain social media platforms.
This is not a ban; it’s a delay to having accounts
Being logged into an account increases the exposure under-16s have to design features that encourage them to spend more time on screens, while serving up content that can harm their health and wellbeing.
The delay is an opportunity for them to build their digital literacy skills and resilience. Visit eSafety.gov.au for more information.
Helping your children deal with this change
We know that changes can sometimes feel worrying or confusing, so now is a good time to talk with your children about how they use social media and how they feel about the delay.
Growing up can be exciting but also challenging. Children are learning how to manage friendships, handle big feelings, deal with pressure, and understand who they are. They may also be thinking about their strengths, their future, and their wellbeing.
Children will always look for information, inspiration and people they admire. As families, we want to be part of these conversations so we can help them find safe, trustworthy and positive places to learn, connect and have shared experiences.
The delay will not suddenly move children away from being online. They will still have a mix of online and offline activities. This delay is a good chance for families to talk openly, listen to their child’s experiences, and learn more about how they use both their online and real-life spaces.
