Assessment at MRPS
As we head towards the end of the year, students have begun assessment of their learning before teachers begin to write the academic reports for Semester 2. Sometimes the assessment is a one-on-one process (think of reading assessments) and sometimes it is done in small groups or whole class (some of our maths assessments).
At home there is nothing to do to prepare for these assessments, but it is a timely reminder of what your child(ren) need(s) as we approach the end of the year. With our swimming program and many end-of-year activities being planned or practised for, they may be needing more sleep than usual. Anything you can do at home that will help them with this will help them do their best when completing assessments. Classroom teachers certainly appreciate your support with this.
Teachers haven't stopped learning!
We have been exploring challenging maths tasks more deeply. We want to focus on the process taken to solve a problem rather than just find an answer. We are also looking at the many different but valuable ways that students see a challenging task and solve it. One aspect of knowing how a student might solve it is for teachers to solve it themselves first. Just like a classroom, that is exactly what teachers did this week during their professional learning hour. It generated some great discussion, especially when collaborating with a peer.
