Learning News
This fortnight, our school has been buzzing with mathematical learning across all stages! Our Infants students have delved into the world of data, exploring how to collect information and represent it visually in various ways. They’ve also been solidifying their core number skills, focusing on counting, mastering number bonds to 10, and developing their skip counting abilities. Meanwhile, Stage 2 has been busy investigating 2D shapes and their distinct features, building a strong foundation in geometry. Our Stage 3 learners have tackled decimals and percentages, honing their skills in approximating decimals and confidently displaying them on a number line. It's been an incredibly engaging and productive fortnight for mathematics at our school.

K/1
In K/1, our mathematicians have been deepening their core number skills, particularly with the exciting introduction of Numicon shapes. These versatile tools helped us explore various number combinations that add to 10, leading to the amazing discovery of nine unique two-number combinations! Some students even extended their thinking to find combinations using three numbers. How incredible! We've also made great strides in data handling, learning to group items into categories, use tally marks, and interpret information presented in picture graphs. It's been a fortnight of fantastic mathematical exploration and discovery for our youngest learners. A huge thankyou to Miss Summerell and Mrs McNair for helping out in my absence.

Year 1
Year 1 has been alive with curiosity as we've explored the exciting world of Data! We've been busy conducting research by asking our classmates fascinating questions, then collecting and representing the information we've found. It's been a fantastic way to learn about each other and discover what makes our class unique!

Year 2
In Year 2, we have been learning to gather and organise data. We went on a virtual zoo trip and had to tally all the animals we saw! Once we counted the animals, we placed our data into a graph and answered some questions. Great work Year 2 Mathematicians!

Year 3
In Year 3, we have been exploring all things two-dimensional. Students have been identifying a variety of 2D shapes, describing their properties and comparing them. We have been hunting for symmetry within our environment and are developing our ability to identify right angles within shapes. Fabulous work Year 3!

Year 4
In Year 4, we have been exploring the exciting world of 2D shapes! These are flat shapes, meaning they only have two dimensions: length and width. You can't pick them up and hold them like a box, because they don't have any thickness. Think about shapes you can draw on a piece of paper, like squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles.
Each of these shapes has special properties, like the number of straight sides or corners (which we call vertices). We learn to identify these shapes and describe their features, and we even made fantastic pictures out of these 2D shapes, helping us to understand the geometry all around us!
This week we looked at Tangrams. Tangrams are Chinese puzzles with seven flat shapes (called "tans"): five triangles, a square, and a parallelogram. You use all seven pieces, without overlapping them, to make different pictures like animals, people, or objects. It's a fun way to build problem-solving skills and creativity. Check out our creations.

Stage 3
Stage 3 have been closely looking at decimals in our mathematics lesson and the important role they play in our society. We discussed the many real life examples and applications where decimals are used such as with money, measurements in many trades or where accuracy is needed with quantities - when near enough is just not good enough.
We have compared the size of decimals using visual representations of MAB blocks and paper strips, and explored placing them on number lines to find the difference.
Zero is definitely a hero when using decimals as it holds such an important place-holding role, not to mention helping us to see the decimal point better when numbers are smaller than one.
Great work Stage 3!
