Generations in Jazz

Beth Tabart, Year 12 Student

Over this past weekend, students in numerous big bands and vocal ensembles made the 6-hour bus ride to Generations in Jazz in Mount Gambier, South Australia.

Tarquin Nielson sent us off on the trip with an amazing devotion. After the long bus ride and settling into accommodation at the Italio Club, the Friday night, the welcome concert entailed an outstanding performance from select members from Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, as well as incredible vocals from both Darren Percival and Michelle Nicole.

Saturday morning started bright and early for most, with school performances by DCC ranging between 8am and 4pm. Students travelled the expansive venue together, supporting and cheering one another on. We had eight ensembles performing at a wide range of venues that day, including the James Morrison Pavillion - the largest tent in the southern hemisphere!

Three Big bands, two vocal ensembles, two small jazz combos, and the Altonatives all performed their outstanding repertoire - special mention to everyone who did a solo on stage!

That night, the Gala concert entailed the full force of the Big Phat Band - creating a magnificent and inspiring sound, and a night to remember. Under Gordon Goodwin's direction, the Big Phat Band emphasized each section of the band - showing their incredible team work and tight melodies, as well as some of the highest notes heard on a trumpet ever.

Sunday consisted of a devotion by Milly Walker, and the closing concert where awards/results were announced.

Our own Zoe Young was nominated for future finalists - which is chosen based on soloing/scatting ability and she performed a solo on the big stage in front of 4000+ people.

Mr Philip Reichman won the award of best music director which is awarded to directors who have demonstrated exceptional leadership through the development of their ensembles.

Both Jasper Nielson and Noah Carr from our Intermediate big band in Division 3 were chosen for the Superband - comprised of the best players for each division.

And finally the Altonatives won second place in Division 1 for Small Vocal Ensemble.

Awesome job to everyone who was able to make it and everyone who performed- everyone sounded amazing!
