Capture the Moments

Tanya Vaughan, Deputy Principal - Head of Primary

We have been talking with the students about the importance of pressing pause and making wise choices as they interact with others in the classroom and in the yard. Learning to slow down, to think and to respond with patience and grace is a big concept for young learners to grasp, but we believe that it is an important life-skill that will set them apart positively for the various challenges that will arise in their lifetime.

Too often, with busy schedules and ‘to-do lists’, we find ourselves rushing to the next thing and we miss the beauty, the little moments, the gems that God has placed in our path each day. I was challenged recently when a staff member shared in a Staff Devotion about how one of her children is very good at intentionally walking slowly, and that along their way they love to notice, appreciate and pick the flowers that they see.

I believe that challenge should drive action, and so, this week I have been deliberate in choosing to slow down in order that I might capture the moments. Here are some moments that I have captured  in our community:

As I write, there is a lovely gathering of Year 5 students meeting with their Prep Buddies in the playground. As I look below, the Year 5 boys are reading and sharing conversations with the Preps about different texts. The older students are taking their buddy role seriously, and they are being supportive of the younger learners. The little ones are listening intently, learning through interaction, conversation and experience. I feel blessed to have captured this moment in time.

Did you notice the effort and energy that went into preparing for our Primary Cross Country event last Friday? I did. As I paused to take in the colour, the layout and the atmosphere, I saw the passion, heart and commitment of staff and parents who made sure that this event was the success it was. Together with the opportunity to bask in the sunshine, I felt blessed to capture this moment as our community gathered to celebrate and encourage our students.

Then there’s the child that pauses the game to take a friend to First Aid; the Learning Assistant who comes alongside a learner in the classroom to give additional support; parents who are busily preparing for the Mother’s Day stall; and the delight in seeing students in classrooms engaged in learning experiences as tours and walkthroughs take place.

Every day there are so many wonderful moments to capture, and for this I am deeply thankful to God for the way He is working in us and through us as a community. Just as I was challenged to slow down, may you too accept the challenge and give thanks as you ‘capture the moments’ that are on your path.
