Dinjerra's School Values Mascots
In 2024, all students at Dinjerra had the opportunity to decide upon animal mascots for our four school values: Success, Optimism, Adventure, and Responsibility. In three buddies lessons in Semester Two, students brainstormed animals in Australia that SOAR and animals that also model the school values in their behaviour. Through this student-centred process, the students decided upon these mascots:
- Success - Sugar Glider
- Optimism - Rainbow Lorikeet
- Adventure - Green Sea Turtle
- Responsibility - Powerful Owl
Following this, students had the opportunity to create pieces of art to support the visibility and tangible use of our mascots throughout the school. All submitted artwork was shared with local visual artist, Alex Wignall. Alex is a teacher at a local school in Yarraville, and was amazed at the student artwork. During Term One, Alex shared drafts of his drawings with Tom Penberthy and with students in our school to gain feedback to improve and adjust the artwork. Finally, Alex shared the completed drawings with our school community. You can find the official mascot artwork below:
If you walk around our school, you will find displays of these four school mascots in every classroom and building, including at the entrance next to the school gate.
Success Motto - Working As A Team
To compliment our continuing work around our school values, Dinjerra learns about a new motto every fortnight. Students learn about the given motto through a short video, a student read-aloud, and by connecting it through the learning during the week.
The motto for week 2 and week 3, which is centred on our school value of Success, is called Working As A Team. Below is the Canva link to our instructional video, which has been seen by all students at Dinjerra. It is brilliantly narrated by Regan Kelly from 3/4C.
