Our Reading lessons will continue to integrate our Inquiry focus for the term. This will involve utilising a range of texts as mentor texts for the whole class, including storybooks, informative texts and short videos. This term, students will be focusing on
- Building their ability to define new words by using context clues within the text.
- Using text clues and background knowledge to infer deeper meanings about the settings, characters or themes within a text.
- Practicing their reading fluency with a focus on communication of volume, pronunciation, expression, intonation and rhythm.
- A range of comprehension strategies including summarising main idea and key details, and making connections.
Other literacy foci will include:
- Continuing to build understanding of sentence structure and beginning to use simple conjunctions to create compound sentences.
- Beginning to understand how to use paragraphs to convey main ideas or arguments.
- Explicit instruction in phonics with a particular focus on new representations of long vowel sounds and consonants.
- Explicit instruction in morphology with a focus on suffixes.
- Instruction in handwriting to support the formation of legible, correctly-spaced letters with correct entry and exit points.
- Instruction on a range of high-frequency words.
