What's happening in our learning spaces?

FOUNDATION NEWS

Welcome back to Term 2! There were many smiling faces as we returned to school this week after a two-week break, with lots of laughter and excitement as we shared our experiences with each other. It has been a short week, but as always, a very busy one!

As writers, we had time and opportunity to draw and write about who we saw, where we went, what we ate, what we played and our favourite events over the school holidays! We were successful by drawing detailed pictures, orally constructing a sentence, recording some of the sounds we could hear at the beginning, middle and end of words, using learnt sight words from the word wall and our word rings, and reading back our sentence. Some of us even used capital letters at the start of our sentences and full stops at the end!

As inquirers and people of faith, we found out about our school’s Patron Saint, Saint Fidelis and explored the significance of ANZAC Day. As researchers, we looked at pictures, listened to information and read different picture story books. On our feast day, we engaged in a shared experience with our buddies to further explore who St Fidelis was, make ANZAC Cookies and make our own poppies. We also had the opportunity to engage in different sports games in mixed teams, such as Hungry Birds, Tunnel Ball and Poison Ball. We had so much fun!

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Location- describing the position/location of objects using language such as besides, under, on
  • Reading: revision of sounds, stretching out words, using learnt sounds to build, read and spell words
  • Writing: writing about our experiences- recording different sounds we can hear in words and beginning to use full stops in our writing
  • Inquiry: tuning in to our Inquiry into stories and cultures
  • Religion: learning the whole school prayer
  • The Resilience Project: friendship and gratitude

We can’t wait for another exciting week, beginning with our very first session of the Dance Till You Drop program!

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

Although a short week, it has been a wonderful start to Term 2! The students have returned to school fresh and ready to get back into the school routine. They have transitioned smoothly into the daily processes.

As people of the Catholic faith, last week, we gathered together and took the time to pray for the late Pope Francis. We will continue to keep him in our prayers and remember his many important teachings and messages to the world. He encouraged us to show compassion, to care and love all of creation.

As a whole school, we celebrated the feast day of our patron Saint Fidelis. We attended a special mass to celebrate his life. To find out about Saint Fidelis, we had the opportunity to collaborate with the Year 3/4 students. Together, we explored fact files, identified key words and created descriptive sentences about Saint Fidelis. Our teachers were very proud of the way that we worked together! Later in the afternoon, we participated in team sports and had a great time! This was completed with a delicious icy pole! Below are some of the  sentences that we created:

  • Saint Fidelis had a strong faith in God and shared this with others.
  • Saint Fidelis was a faithful priest who taught others about Jesus.
  • Saint Fidelis showed compassion to others.
  • Saint Fidelis shared his love for God with others.

As mathematicians, this week will be reviewing place value. We will revisit the following skills:

  • Year 1: Reading, writing and renaming two digit numbers. Identifying 10 more and less than a two digit number and rounding numbers to the nearest ten.
  • Year 2: Reading, writing and renaming three digit numbers. Identifying 10 more and less than a three digit number and rounding numbers to the nearest hundred.

As readers and writers, we will begin the SMART spelling process. This week, we will focus on the spelling rule: The letter /k/ making the sound ‘’k’’ as in kitten. We will also tune in to reading and writing information texts and begin with exploring various exemplar texts.

We encourage all students to begin engaging in home learning this week which includes reading and spelling daily as well as engaging in the current maths rubric a few times a week. We appreciate your support with this!

YEAR 3/4 NEWS

Welcome back to Term 2!

As members of a faith community, we celebrated Saint Fidelis’ Feast Day on Thursday 24th of April. We started our day with Mass, and continued into learning activities with the Year 1/2s. We read a fact file on Saint Fidelis and created a sentence showing our understanding of the type of person he was. In the afternoon, we engaged in various sports activities facilitated by Mr Jennings. We had a great time mingling with students from all classes.

As inquirers, we have been exploring picture books commemorating ANZAC Day. 3/4BP and 5/6ZK will be leading our ANZAC Day ceremony on Monday 28th of April. On this day, we will be wearing poppies that we made as part of our learning.

Mrs Monaghan’s Maths Multiplication Workshop

A reminder to all parents who wish to attend Mrs Monaghan’s multiplication workshop. This will be held on Thursday 1st May at 9am and 2:30pm. Please register your interest by completing and returning the note handed out last term.

Home Learning & SMART Spelling Expectations

Please continue to encourage your child to engage in their home learning weekly, especially their SMART spelling sheet. Your child needs to write every spelling word listed on the sheet each night to consolidate the spelling focus of the week. Every Friday a spelling test is conducted in the classroom, so practice at home is vital.

A reminder that school diaries and SMART spelling sheets are handed to your child’s classroom teacher EVERY FRIDAY.

The home learning tasks have an assigned date listed on the top of the sheet.

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

Welcome back, everyone! We had such a great start to the school term. We were extremely busy this week, with our Saint Fidelis' Feast Day and ANZAC Day learning.

This week, we explored ANZAC learning through a range of meaningful activities. Students stepped into the shoes of soldiers by writing heartfelt letters from the frontlines, gaining insight into the emotions and experiences of war. We also created symbolic red poppies to honour those who served. A highlight was comparing the picture storybook Only a Donkey with our class novel The Silver Donkey—both powerful war stories that feature donkeys, yet tailored to different audiences. This comparison sparked thoughtful discussions about how war is portrayed for younger versus older readers.

We also had a jam packed day on Thursday, where we attended mass, engaged in some Saint Fidelis Learning with our buddies and lastly played a range of tabloid sport games - thanks to Mr Jennings!

We had such a great time working in different mixed groups to play different games around the school. Congratulations to all the Year 6s who led the activities.

Also a big congratulations to Gus who was selected and played in a state baseball tournament over the holidays! 5 games over 2 days out at Knox, he represented his club Essendon in the Little League Competition - amazing effort Gus!

Have a wonderful week and we look forward to seeing you all around!
