Year 3 News

Reading
The Year 3 cohort focused on compare-and-contrast skills and literal questioning during Reading this fortnight. Students explored nonfiction texts and identified similarities and differences between them. They also worked on literal questions, locating information in texts and answering questions where the responses were directly stated.
“I learned the compare means what is alike and contrast are things aren't alike” - Harper 3A
“It was a bit challenging but it was fun” - Georgia 3A
Writing
This fortnight, Year 3 students began exploring a new writing genre; Explanation Texts. To introduce the genre, students brainstormed and recorded questions about things they were curious to learn more about, focusing on how and why things happen. This helped students develop an understanding of the purpose of explanation texts and sparked their curiosity about the world around them.
In Grammar and Punctuation, students learned about the prefix super-, which means "above," "greater than," or "beyond." They explored how the prefix changes the meaning of words and identified examples such as supermarket. Students enjoyed discovering and discussing other words that begin with super- and considering how their meanings are connected.
Maths
In this fortnight, the Year 3 cohort explored three dimensional objects and identified different types such as cubes, pyramids, and cylinders. Students then focused on key vocabulary including vertices, apex, faces, and edges. They used real-life objects in the classroom, such as tissue boxes and water bottles, to help make connections between three dimensional objects and everyday items. Students also identified and discussed the differences between pyramids and prisms.

“I learnt lots of things can be 3D objects in real life” - Indy 3A
Inquiry
In this fortnight, the Year 3 students continued their Geography learning by exploring Australia’s neighbouring countries. Students investigated the natural, managed, and constructed features of places and developed an understanding of the differences between them. Students then selected a place either in Australia or from one of our neighbouring countries and wrote descriptive paragraphs about its natural, managed, and constructed features

Social and Emotional Learning
In Social and Emotional Learning, Year 3 students explored the importance of respect, understanding, and inclusion during Reconciliation Week. Through discussions and activities, students learned about the significance of reconciliation and ways we can work together to build positive relationships and a stronger community.
As part of our SWPBS learning, students focused on identifying trusted adults and support people around the school. They discussed who they can go to for help when they have a problem, feel worried, or need support. This learning helped students build confidence in seeking assistance and understanding that there are many people at school who are there to help them succeed and feel safe.
Auslan
In Auslan, Year 3 students continued to build their signing skills by learning signs for common household appliances and medical-related vocabulary. Students practised using these signs in a variety of activities and conversations, helping them expand their communication skills and understanding of Auslan. They enjoyed learning new ways to describe everyday objects and important health-related concepts while developing their confidence in signing.
“I enjoyed that using medical signs help us learn more” - Anastasia 3A
Special Events
National Simultaneous Story time
On Wednesday, 27th May, the Foundation to Year 3 students participated in Simultaneous Storytime, where students across the nation paused to enjoy the same story at the same time. This special event can take place in classrooms, homes, or libraries and encourages a shared love of reading. This year’s book was Luna-roo, inspired by the upcoming 2026 World Cup, and it carried a wonderful message about resilience and determination. The students thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story and were excited to take part in follow-up activities, including creating bookmarks and completing a word search.

Bush Buddies Incursion
Last Thursday, our students participated in the Bush Buddies incursion, where they explored the environment and learned about Indigenous Australians’ strong connection to land, nature, and water. The session began with a story and an Acknowledgement of Country, helping students understand the importance of caring for Country. Students then learned about Indigenous seasons and discovered that Aboriginal perspectives recognise more than the four seasons we commonly know. They explored what changes occur throughout different times of the year, including the plants, animals, and weather patterns connected to each season. Students also enjoyed using stamps featuring different flora and fauna to create artwork. To conclude the session, students worked together using ropes to demonstrate how ecosystems are interconnected and created a class terrarium using plants and soil, which will now be cared for and displayed in our classroom.

They proudly showcased their learning by identifying, describing, and discussing the features of a variety of three dimensional objects. Working alongside their families, they explored faces, edges, and vertices while using mathematical language to explain their thinking. It was wonderful to see students confidently sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for mathematics with the visitors.
