Year 2 News

Reading
In week 6, students have continued learning to understand why an author wrote a text. They explored the text's purpose of persuading. Students discussed features, language and ideas in texts to support their thinking and build a deeper understanding of what they read.
In Reading during week 7, students focused on identifying the main idea of a text. They practised reading fiction texts and thinking about what the story was mostly about, using important details from the text to help them determine the main message or big idea.
In Phonics over the past 2 weeks, students have focused on spelling words containing the 'e' and 'er' sounds. They practised identifying the number of sounds in words, listening for and identifying individual sounds, building words using sound cards, and reading words with increasing accuracy and confidence. These activities helped students strengthen their understanding of sound-letter relationships and develop their reading and spelling skills.

Writing
This fortnight in writing, the Year 2 students have been working on using boundary punctuation independently. They were given the opportunity to write factual sentences about an animal to demonstrate their grammar skills and ability to write different types of sentences. In handwriting, the students have focused on ensuring their letters are the correct size and have been using dotted thirds to help them practice this.
In genre writing, the Year 2 students have been planning and starting to write an explanation text. They developed the understanding that explanation text explains how or why something happens. Students then created a text to explain how the seasons change and why they wear different clothes for different seasons.

Inquiry
In Inquiry this fortnight, the Year 2 students have been learning about how the land has changed over time with a particular focus on how Aboriginal people cared for the land. They have discussed how Indigenous people used their environment for resources, how they used trees to build canoes, how they used leaves from plants for medical reasons and how they entertained themselves. The students have also thought about how we can care for the land and suggested ways that we can look after our environment.

Social and Emotional Learning
This fortnight in Respectful Relationships, Year 2 students have been focusing on asking for help. Students established what they could need help with at school and at home. They used two separate hand templates and filled them in with who they could ask help for at school and at home and who they could help at school and at home.
In our SWPBS lessons Year 2 students have been exploring the littering issue around the school yard. They went out for a walk and discovered that there were wrappers scattered in different areas of the yard. Students discussed how they could help with this issue and decided to create posters to help stop littering in the school yard. Year 2’s have started to plan for their posters and in coming weeks they will be displaying them in the yard.
Auslan
In Auslan, Year 2 students have been learning the signs for different appliances that can be used at home. They practised signing these appliances and recognised signs used by others. Students engaged in a class mime game where they had to guess the appliance they continued to build on their Auslan skills during this fun classroom game.
Special Events
Maths Open Morning
On Wednesday 3rd, June parents and carers were invited into classrooms so they could see students’ learning in action. Parents and carers observed students engaging in using subtraction strategies on mini whiteboards and joined in by playing maths games alongside the students. They enjoyed engaging in games and applying their knowledge about subtraction strategies with the support and encouragement of parents and carers.

National Simultaneous Story time
On Wednesday, 27th May, our Foundation to Year 3 students took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, joining students from across Australia in reading the same book at the same time. This exciting event was held in classrooms throughout the school. This year’s featured story, Luna-roo, was inspired by the upcoming 2026 World Cup and shared an inspiring message about perseverance, resilience and believing in yourself. Students thoroughly enjoyed the story and enthusiastically participated in a range of follow-up activities, including designing bookmarks and completing a themed word search.
