Year 1 News

Reading
During Reading sessions in week 6 the Year 1 students explored various non fiction text features such as captions, labels, contents page and glossary. They learnt to identify each feature and explain what its purpose is. They also had a chance to locate each text feature in a range of non fiction texts and write facts they learnt in each text. It was great to see students identify each feature confidently.
In week 7 the Year 1 students focussed on inferring through short clips with no words. This involved them watching a variety of short clips that encouraged them to make inferences about what was happening, character feelings and what may happen next. Students were very engaged and some amazing inferences were made. This was a great way to practise inferring in an exciting and engaging way!

Maths
In Maths sessions in week 6 students practised counting by 10s, 5s and 2s from 0- 120. This involved them practising counting by 5s, 10s and 2s together as a class and playing games that focused on counting. Students also had the chance to practise their counting with a partner and independently using hundreds charts to help them stay on track. It was fantastic to see students' confidence build with their counting over the week.
In Maths sessions in week 7 the Year 1 students learnt about Division through sharing. They used hands-on materials such as counters and unifix to show their understanding of sharing between groups. Students practised sharing between 2 and 4 groups and learnt about equal shares. They also had the opportunity to play online games as a class which involved division and sharing.

Inquiry
In Inquiry, students explored weather by learning about how rainfall is measured and creating their own rain gauges. This hands-on investigation helped students understand how weather can be observed and recorded. They also consolidated their learning about landscapes by identifying and discussing natural, managed, and constructed features found in different environments. Students then applied this knowledge by creating a detailed plan for a landscape diorama, which will guide the construction of their models in upcoming lessons.

Special Event
Open Classroom
It was wonderful to welcome families into our classroom for our Maths Open Morning! Students proudly shared their learning about two dimensional shapes, exploring and identifying their properties, including sides and corners. As part of a cross-curricular activity, students applied their knowledge of two dimesional shapes to create self-portraits. Using a variety of shapes, they carefully designed and constructed creative artworks while demonstrating their understanding of shape properties. It was fantastic to see students confidently explain their thinking and learning to their families.
