Queensland Regional Ensemble Program

Article written by Year 11 student, Ami Kaur

Five students recently represented St Stephen's at the Queensland Regional Ensemble Program (QREP) in Cairns. Darby Brunjes, Tom Fenner, Xavier Myrteza, Julia Bannink, and Cobie Langton joined talented young musicians from across the region for an exciting weekend of rehearsals, workshops, and performances.

Throughout the program, students were placed in ensembles where they explored a range of contemporary and jazz pieces. They also took part in masterclasses focusing on improvisation, rhythm section skills, and interactive performance.

QREP gave students the opportunity to work with world class musicians, including CQUniversity lecturers and members of the Army 1RAR Band, while performing with musicians they had never worked with before. The experience encouraged students to develop their performance skills, learn challenging new repertoire, and step outside their comfort zones.

The weekend concluded with a public concert showcasing the work students had developed throughout the program. Staff involved in the event commended the students for their enthusiasm and commitment throughout the weekend, noting that they represented the school exceptionally well.

Mr Manley, Middle Leader Curriculum of Arts and LOTE, also observed a noticeable improvement in the students' musical abilities following the weekend. Reflecting on the experience, he said, “It was such a joy to see the growth in our students from when they entered on the first day, to the concert on the final day. This really showed their commitment and drive to improve that much over a single weekend.”

We congratulate Darby, Tom, Xavier, Julia, and Cobie on representing St Stephen's so well and hope to see them continue growing as musicians.
