Chess Winners
Mr Chris Ellison
Fifteen St Stephen's students competed in Round 2 of the Far North Queensland Chess competition which was held in Cairns recently. 184 secondary students from fifteen secondary schools competed at the event across three divisions.
In Premier Division, St Stephen's Team 1 (Tom Fenner, Patrick McCarthy, Ruben Longakit and Christian Salvetti) finished runners-up, narrowly missing out on the win by half a point to the winning team from Trinity Anglican School. There were fifty teams registered in Round 2 and the strongest eight teams are selected to play in Premier Division.

Patrick McCarthy was undefeated in his seven games and finished as individual runner-up in Premier Division, again only half a point behind the overall winner. Christian Salvetti and Ruben Longakit battled strongly to achieve merit ribbons for winning 4.5+ points for the day.
St Stephen's Team 2 (Samuel Sunny, Angus Cahill, Jake Cook and Jonathan Falvo) won the A Division competition convincingly, finishing three points ahead of the runners-up. St Stephen's Team 3 also competed strongly, finishing in seventh place from the sixteen teams in this division.

Merit Ribbons were awarded to Samuel Sunny, Alperen Pokharel, Angus Cahill, Jake Cook and Jonathan Falvo in this division.
In B Division, St Stephen's Team 4 played exceptionally well considering they were down one player and comprised of mainly Year 7 students. Stephen Falvo stood out as the star performer for this team, earning a merit ribbon for his five points from seven games.
Congratulations to the team and thank you to Mr Harnischfeger for coaching the team and taking them to the competition. Round 3 will be held on Thursday September 3, with qualification for the State Titles up for grabs. A full list of results can be found here.
