Year 11 Sport & Recreation Try Wheelchair Basketball

Our Year 11 Sport and Recreation students recently had the fantastic opportunity to experience wheelchair basketball—and what an unforgettable session it was!

A huge thank you goes to Angela Willett and the Atherton Basketball Association for generously supplying the sports wheelchairs and making this experience possible. Angela’s expertise and enthusiasm were evident as she guided students through the unique rules, techniques, and strategies of the game. Her clear instruction and encouragement helped students quickly build confidence and fully engage in the experience.

We were also incredibly fortunate to have Mr Duncan MacGregor join us for the session. Watching an experienced player in action was both inspiring and eye-opening for our students, who gained a deeper appreciation for the skill, agility, and game sense required to excel in wheelchair basketball.

The session was filled with energy, laughter, and a strong sense of teamwork as students navigated the court in a completely new way. Beyond the fun, it was a powerful learning experience—challenging students to think differently about movement, sport, and participation. By stepping into the chairs themselves, students were able to better understand how inclusive sporting opportunities can be created and enjoyed by all.

Experiences like this help build respect, empathy, and awareness in authentic and meaningful ways, reinforcing that sport is for everyone. Our students embraced the challenge wholeheartedly, and it was wonderful to see them support one another and celebrate their progress.

Overall, it was a joyful and memorable day, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to making it such a success.
