Prep/1 Mainstream

We have continued to look at student questions during Discovery Learning and students have researched an animal and completed an information report describing what the animal looks like, where it lives and what it eats. Students were given the opportunity to individually research information on iPads using epic books.
Literacy
In Reading, we will continue to focus on phonics, including sounding out words, reading fluency and spelling words. In Foundation, students have looked at double letters representing a single sound at the end of a word like hill, cuff, mess and buzz. Students have been introduced to ck - black duck.
Foundation students should continue to take home their reading folders to practise reading at home.
In Year 1, students continue to look at long vowel sounds in Stage 7.1. They have focused on the long i sound represented by igh - lightning bright and y - spy in the sky. Year one students should practise their reading at home.
In Writing, students have looked at nonfiction texts about animals and recorded new information. They have been able to state information about the appearance, diet and habitat of an animal of their choice.
Students continue to focus on the following secretarial skills:
- Writing the sounds they hear in each word
- Starting a sentence with a capital letter
- Putting a finger space between each word
- Ending a sentence with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Forming letters correctly
Maths
In Mathematics last week, students explored 2D and 3D shapes. They learned about the features of 2D shapes and used the language of ‘edges/sides, vertices/corners and curved/straight’ to describe them. We played games such as; ‘Guess my shape!’ Which helped students use their critical thinking skills to devise questions that result in a ‘yes’ or ‘no' answer. We explored which 3D shapes can roll, stack or slide. Then we used 3D shapes to create our own shape houses!
This week, students have been exploring the concept of equal shares. We have been using real-life scenarios to build an understanding of equal and unequal shares, and how to represent these as ‘maths drawings’ and using numbers. For example: “During fruit break, if we cut up our apple into 8 parts, can we share them equally between two of our classmates? How about three or four classmates?”
