INCLUSIVE EDUCATION CENTRE NEWS
It has been a busy and exciting start to the term in the Inclusive Education Centre!
During the school holidays, Mr Luxford generously volunteered his time to paint two checkerboards, a 10-square hopscotch, and a six-square handball court for our students to enjoy. These fantastic additions have already become popular during breaks. A huge thank you, Mr Luxford, for your time and hard work!
Welcome
We would also like to extend a warm welcome to Keelan B, who has joined our wonderful cohort of students this term. Keelan has settled in beautifully and recently showcased his culinary talents by helping Mrs Kent and Ms Sims support students in making delicious kangaroo burgers.
Hands-On Learning Across the Curriculum
Our students have been actively engaged in Mathematics lessons using a scaffolded approach that supports every learner to achieve success. By combining the interactive whiteboard with hands-on manipulatives such as base-ten blocks, students are able to build their understanding of place value and mathematical concepts in a visual and practical way.
Individualised 1:1 support from staff ensures that each student receives guidance tailored to their learning needs, helping them develop confidence, independence and problem-solving skills. This scaffolded, multi-sensory approach is not limited to Mathematics—it is embedded across all Key Learning Areas in the Inclusive Education Centre.
By providing visual supports, hands-on experiences, technology and personalised instruction, we create meaningful learning opportunities that enable every student to access the curriculum, develop independence and experience success.
Learning Through Fun and Simple Activities
Learning does not always happen at a desk—sometimes it comes with a very sour surprise! In the Inclusive Education Centre, we love finding fun and engaging ways to build important life skills. One of our students' favourite activities this term has been the Sour Warhead Challenge. This light-hearted challenge incorporates learning across PDHPE, English and The Resilience Project. The goal is simple—see who can keep a straight face the longest after eating a sour Warhead! More importantly, students develop resilience, learn to laugh with one another (and at themselves), and strengthen positive social interactions in a supportive and encouraging environment. Keelan even managed to convince Mrs Kent to give the challenge a go, providing a very enthusiastic countdown before she took the plunge! It certainly gave everyone a good laugh and was a wonderful example of students building confidence, connection and resilience together.
Science
In MC2, students are engaging in hands-on scientific investigation by collecting samples from everyday objects to observe bacterial growth. They took swabs from a variety of items including shoes, t-shirts, headphones, mobile phones, and even the front gate. By incubating these samples and watching bacteria multiply, students learn about microorganisms, hygiene, and the unseen world around them. This activity helps develop their understanding of scientific methods, observation skills, and the importance of cleanliness in everyday life.
Global Events
The class is participating in a current events project by following the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
They are keeping track of medal tallies for different countries, which integrates geography, mathematics, and social studies into their learning. This activity fosters global awareness, critical thinking, and engagement with real-world international events. Together, these activities promote inquiry, curiosity, and cross-curricular learning, making science and global awareness exciting and relevant for the students.
Farewell
At the end of this term, we will be saying farewell to six valued members of our IEC family: Richard S, Dwight BH, Harley F, Resheena G, Jordon W and Ryan D. Each of these students has made a unique contribution to our learning community, and we are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved during their time with us. Resheena, Jordon and Ryan are nearing the completion of their post-school transition programs, while Dwight and Richard have both secured employment. Richard has commenced work at KFC, and Dwight has gained employment at a local motorbike shop. Harley is also preparing for his next chapter, and we know he has an exciting future ahead. While it is always difficult to say goodbye, it is also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the growth, and achievements of these students. We wish each of them every success as they begin this exciting new stage of their lives. They will be greatly missed by both staff and students, and we look forward to hearing about all they accomplish in the future.
Work and the Community - Senior Excursion to Lake Inverell
A group of Senior students went to Lake Inverell last Friday. They enjoyed going for a walk around the Lake. They learnt about the building of the weir to provide a water source for the town, how the local biome is being preserved and the upcoming upgrades to improve recreation opportunities in the area. Students also discussed issues with foxes stealing all the turtle eggs, and how this will affect turtle populations into the future. Students enjoyed cooking a BBQ, and explored ideas for post school life such as keeping fit, maintaining good mental health and being part of your community.
