Whats Happening in the Kitchen and Garden for 2026?
WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM OUR YEAR 5 AND 3 STUDENTS !!
Garden
The rain has continued to hold off on garden days!! Super lucky :)
We have loved hearing about how our students are helping with their gardens at home and can recall all the fabulous edibles they are growing in their veggie gardens.
Next time you are out in the garden, ask your child to come out and have a look. Ask them questions about what they have been doing at school and see if they can identify any of the veggies.
The garden is looking fabulous with heaps of chard and silverbeet, b roccoli, carrots, beetroot, lettuce, peas are coming on, broad beans have heaps of flowers and all of our onions are growing wonderfully. Our feathered friends are giving us 3-4 eggs per day and have settled in like they have always been at Surfside.
KITCHEN
There were more than a few tears in the kitchen this round, but I'm happy to report they were all due to the amount of onions being cut up this week! Some chose to wear our special onion goggles, and same braved the sting, but all were rewarded with a delicious caramelised onion pizza. We were also busy preparing some onion jam which will be available for purchase in a few weeks - so keep an eye out. The corn fritter recipe was a favourite after-school bake for George back in the day, but it is easily adaptable to whatever you have handy, perhaps a grated carrot or zucchini, and leftovers make great lunchbox fillers. We enjoyed a new recipe of Baked ricotta gnocchi, and utilised the passata made in Term 1 when tomatoes were abundant. Our sweet treat was passionfruit tarts (or lemon once our freezer stash of passionfruit runs out).
As always we love for you to come and join us in the kitchen to see (and taste!) just what the students are capable of. Just sign in at the office and come on down to the kitchen - we'll have an apron waiting for you!
Recipes
SNACK SHACK
This week our Snack Shackers made hedgehog and last week we created the new and fabulous wagonwheel slice. Next week we will serving purple slice to speak out against bull! If anyone is interested in helping out with this program, we meet on a Tuesday session 5 (2.15-3.15) or 8.45am wednesdays to cut the slices. Please contact Clancey to see how you can get involved!
Food Scrap Friday
Our Food Scrap Friday team are looking for new team members! If you have ever wondered how we make our fabulous compost for the garden and how our school is very clever at keeping tonnes of food scraps out of landfill, then the Food Scrap Friday team is for you! Come along this Friday before school as find out how you can get involved.
Recycling at Surfside - SHREDDED PAPER!
We need your shredded paper for our compost bins. If you have access to shredded paper at home or work, we would like you to donate it. You can leave it at the office or drop off to the garden Tues, Wed and Thursdays
VOLUNTEERS
If you have a spare hour or 2 per week and would like to volunteer in the best program on the Bellarine, please reach out and we will send you some info on how to get involved. Please make sure you check into the office to complete your volunteer induction (everyone must complete this each year - even if you have volunteered in the past) and have a valid Working With Children Check.
Thanks
Clancey and George
