Mitchell Collocott - 10B
Over the school holidays, Year 10 student, Mitchell Collocott, was selected to take part in the Australian Defence Force’s competitive STEM Horizons – Air Mobility Program in Gippsland. This program brought together 25 students from Far North Queensland, Brisbane, New South Wales, and Victoria for an immersive four-day program that focused on innovative Defence and aerospace technology.
Participants worked in small teams to tackle real-world STEM challenges presented by Defence and industry partners. The program included site visits to RAAF Base East Sale, where students toured Jet Aviation, Pilatus, and Lockheed Martin facilities, and the Air Mission Training School. In addition to these activities, participants experienced life on base by staying in Defence accommodation and dining in the mess hall.
Teams were guided through the design thinking process, developing prototypes and presenting their ideas in a “shark tank” style pitch competition to a panel of Defence and industry representatives. This unique opportunity gave Mitchell valuable insight into careers in engineering, science, and technology within Defence, while also strengthening his teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.
We congratulate Mitchell on being selected for this outstanding program and for representing our school with enthusiasm and commitment.
There are many opportunities for students to apply for additional programs and experiences throughout the year. There are so many wonderful activities that make great additions to a student’s resume.
