The Powerful Link Between Learning and Wellbeing

At Skye Primary, we know that learning and wellbeing are deeply connected — each one supports and strengthens the other. When children feel safe, valued, and connected, their minds are more open to learning. The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) highlights that students “need to feel accepted, valued and have a positive sense of belonging to sustain their attention and focus within the learning environment.”

That’s why our Engagement Norms are central to everything we do. These shared expectations — being ready to learn, showing respect, listening to others, and contributing positively — help every student know what successful participation looks like. Predictable routines and clear norms reduce anxiety, promote fairness, and create a sense of safety and equity in our classrooms. When students understand what is expected and feel that everyone is held to the same high standards, they are free to focus their attention on learning rather than worrying about what might happen next.

The Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) reinforces this by emphasising the importance of strong relationships, clarity of purpose, and consistency in practice. When teachers use clear learning goals, model expected behaviours, and provide supportive feedback, students not only achieve better academic outcomes — they also feel more confident, connected, and capable.

This sense of success builds self-efficacy — the belief that effort leads to improvement. As students experience success through persistence, their wellbeing grows alongside their achievement.

At Skye Primary, we are proud that our focus on engagement and wellbeing creates classrooms where every child can thrive. By nurturing calm, consistent and inclusive learning environments, we ensure that all students — no matter their background or starting point — have the opportunity to feel good, learn well and succeed together.

Have a wonderful weekend!
