Connect: Year 1

The term is well underway, and students have settled beautifully into their learning routines. Over the coming weeks, classes will be participating in a range of engaging activities while teachers begin preparing for end-of-year assessments and reports. It’s always a busy period, but one filled with great energy and a sense of achievement as we reflect on the year’s progress.

Upcoming Learning:

Our phonics focus in the next two weeks will be the sounds 'u-e', 'ew', 'ue' and 'ui'. The students will learn the different ways these phonemes can be represented. They will practise reading words, phrases and sentences. They will build to reading a decodable text with increasing fluency. As always practising with Little Learner books at home is a fantastic reinforcement.

📢 As we prepare for a stocktake, we kindly ask that any Little Learners Love Literacy books currently at home be returned to school. Students can continue to access and enjoy the online versions while we complete this process. Thank you for helping us keep our resources organised and ready for use next year.

In Writing, students have been exploring and will continue to explore the beautiful story Migaloo – The White Whale. They’ve been diving into the narrative structure by identifying the characters, setting, actions, problems, and solutions. The class has loved learning fascinating facts about whales and making connections between the story and real-life ocean life. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have truly brought our writing sessions to life!

Numeracy

In Maths, students have been learning to use ordinal numbers and positional language to describe and follow directions. They’ve enjoyed exploring real-life examples, such as races and obstacle courses: to practise identifying positions like first, second, and third, as well as giving and following directions using words, symbols, and simple maps. These lessons are helping build important spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills that will support future learning in maths and beyond.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, our focus is on Sound and Light. Students will continue to explore where sound and light come from, learning to identify natural and man-made sources all around us. To put their learning into action, they’ll even design and create their own musical instruments: a fun, hands-on way to discover how sound is made and travels. It’s sure to be a bright and noisy adventure!

Wellbeing

In wellbeing, we are learning about being kind and respectful to others. Students are exploring how everyone has the right to feel safe and how it’s important to respect personal space and boundaries. We’re also talking about what to do if someone makes them feel upset or uncomfortable and who they can talk to for help. These lessons help students build confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of respect for themselves and others.

Art Show Success

We’re so proud of our Grade 1 students for the amazing artworks they displayed at the Art Show! A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful families for your donations, help on the day, and support of our fundraising efforts. We truly appreciate your flexibility with the date change. It allowed us to avoid the wet weather and enjoy a fantastic evening together. Take a look below to see some of the students’ beautiful creations up close!

We loved welcoming our grandparents to school for a wonderful morning filled with smiles, stories, and laughter. It was so special to see students proudly sharing their classrooms and learning with their grandparents. Thank you to everyone who joined us, your presence made the day truly memorable for the children (and for us too!).

Have a great long weekend!
