Boarding News

Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding

Last weekend was quite busy with a number of notable involvements by the boarders in key events.

Over the last couple of years, we have developed leadership opportunities for the Marist boarders and one such initiative is a leadership camp for all the Year 11 boarders which took place last weekend. We deliberately take the boys off campus to the Bunya Mountains which provides a great setting for key staff to work with them on developing a better understanding of how to lead effectively, as well as allowing the boys to set their goals and action plan for 2026. With our Year 12’s becoming busy with master classes and upcoming external exams, the camp is well timed with the Year 11 cohort starting to step up as leaders in the boarding school. Our Year 11’s impressed greatly on this leadership camp. They are a united cohort and it was evident that this group of boys are committed to sharing the load next year as they strive to achieve their goals. Congratulations to all our Year 11’s on their effort over the weekend and thankyou to Ty Casey, Brad Winchester, Blair Whitlock, Francis Sevil and Isaac Roach who assisted with the leadership camp.

Well done and thankyou to our Year 10 boarders who represented Marist College Ashgrove in the 42 For 42 at Suncorp Stadium over the weekend. This is our fourth year getting behind this great event which raises awareness about those Australian service men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Afghanistan conflict. It is particularly special to be able to support the family of Old Boy and boarder, Ricky Milosevic (1985 – 1989) who lost his life in Afghanistan. Thanks are extended to Jake Platen who led his Year 10 boys in getting up at the very early hour of 3.30am on Saturday morning so they could walk to show respect for those who served.

Another involvement to cap off a busy weekend saw our Year 6 – 8 boarders participate in the Walk For Awareness on Sunday morning which is an event to highlight the importance of mental health. This charity was started by two Old Boys of Marist College Ashgrove. The boys represented their school very well by walking up to 9km around the cliffs of Kangaroo Point. It was quite a hot morning and the boys are to be commended for not shirking the challenge. Thanks to Shane Ward, Pierce Hardy and Ben Lee for taking the boys in for this community event.

Looking ahead, we have a sleepover weekend coming up with a good number of new boarders for 2026 joining our boarding community to get used to the routine and establish some new friendships before they start next year. We also have a Year 12 Boarders Dinner with key staff, as well as the Year 11 Social which are both events the boys are anticipating. It is certainly shaping up to be a busy term!
