It was another fantastic year at KCHS. All students should be proud of their learning, growth and achievements throughout the year. Throughout the year, our staff have worked tirelessly to provide our students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning in fun and engaging ways. Our students demonstrated initiative, problem solving and creativity in all their learning tasks.
Looking Back on the Year:
In term two, a major highlight was the Years 7-9 Market Stalls, as part of this term’s humanities unit. We dedicated an afternoon to students creating a market in the courtyard, including everything from car washes, raffles, and retail stalls. Our humanities teacher Brett and his team put in such considerable effort that the day was nothing short of a success!
In term three, The Year 11s upheld their own tradition through their Personal Development project, hosting the annual School Dance. The evening was a huge success, with students celebrating together while raising money to refurbish the gazebo into a serene space for the whole school community. We are grateful to the students for their efforts in organising the night, and to the community for their generous support and donations.
Term Four:
In humanities, the year 9 students were able to plan, organise and run an amazing Amazing Race day throughout the Melbourne CBD for the Year 7, 8 & 10 students. Although it was a warm day, the vibes from all participants were high and collaboration and problem solving were at the forefront!
Across Year 7 - 10, the food technology students wrapped up and enriching and highly rewarding year. The students were exposed to new cuisines, and cooking styles throughout the year and the Year 9 & 10 students engaged in food technology offsite at the Jean McKendry House in North Melbourne. To end the year on a high note, the Year 8 students organised their own high tea, where they invited their parents and caregivers into the school to share a meal. It was a wonderful experience.
Finally, our school band Problematic had the opportunity to perform live at the SongMakers Live event at the Espy. It was such a fantastic event, and our band played unbelievably well. It was a great demonstration of the whole-school community coming to support our own and acknowledge the hard work and learning that has occurred in music over the last three terms. Well done to Is, El, Jesse and Daniel as well as Simon, Josh and the team in supporting our students on this great day.
Looking Ahead to 2026:
In 2026, the school will be teaching English and Maths in the morning periods (1 & 2) across all year levels. We believe that this change will benefit our students Core subjects (Science, Media, Food Technology, PE & Health, Art and Humanities) will be taught after recess. Some of these subjects will be taught on a semesterly basis. However, students will be able to engage with all subjects across a school year.
Finally, we will be incorporating an Elective Program two days a week, during period 5 & 6. Year 7 & 8 students will work together, and Year 9 & 10 students will also work together. The Elective Program will be working towards running a School Fete in week 8 or 9 (dates to be finalised). There will be different streams within the Electives, and the students will select the stream they want to work in for the term. The theme or idea will change each term.
Next year, we will start our new School Strategic Plan (SSP). I look forward to beginning the new four year journey on improving our teaching and learning program and seeing all our students demonstrating learning and personal growth.
