Secondary School

I wish to extend a warm welcome back to Term Four to all our families. We have an exciting term ahead!
Over the break, we had a group of Secondary School students visit New York City. They had an amazing time and by all accounts, were an absolute credit to the school and their families in the way they behaved. One of the points of difference of attending GSG is the exposure to these types of transformative opportunities and I extend my sincere thanks to the staff and the families that helped make this tour happen. We continue to plan for exciting events, tours, camps and cocurricular activities that help our students thrive outside of the classroom to add to their educational experience.
Being part of a community like this, celebrating milestone events and participating in rituals and traditions, is another aspect that makes schools like GSG special. I am particularly looking forward to helping celebrate our Year Twelve Valedictory celebrations next week. There will be an intimate chapel service with Year Twelve students and their families, followed by a Whole School Assembly so that we can all share in sending our Year Twelve students off in the best possible way.
Of course, aside from all the cocurricular activities, we are here to make the most of our classroom experience as well. At our first assembly for this term, Mrs Emma Franklin addressed the school to remind us all of our “Ready to Learn” statements and I thought I would share them with families today.
Last week was Mental Health Week in Australia, culminating in World Mental Health Day on Friday 10 October. I took the opportunity to speak with students at the assembly about mental health. My main messages were about perspective, patience, kindness, self-awareness and balance.
We have wonderful support systems in Secondary School and in Boarding to help our students with their mental health and to give them positive mentoring and reassurance. We are dedicated to working in partnership with families to help our students thrive during these adolescent years. We also equip our students to be self-aware and to be good support for others. Our Year Eight and Year Ten students are trained in Mental Health First Aid during their Health lessons by our resident expert Ms Sheryl Moncur, which is an outstanding programme and another key point of difference at our school.
I wish all families a wonderful week ahead.
