Term 1 Week 6- 8th March 2024
And just like that, we are more than half way through the term! The students have blown our minds with their patience, generosity and courage as we continue through the year. They have all picked up the routine so calmly and beautifully.
What we are learning!
Maths:
In maths, we have been learning the days of the week. We have been discussing and exploring what we do on each day of the week, and each time of the day. We have learnt that we may do different things in the morning, midday, afternoon and evening. At home, you can continue to practise the days of the week. You can even try questioning your child on the day of the week today, yesterday and tomorrow!
Little Learners love literacy:
Our Little Learners Love Literacy program is going extremely well. We have had so much fun meeting a different character each week, this week's character is Peter the Penguin! We have covered the sounds m s f a and p. Ask your child what the letter is and what sound/s that letter makes. This is a great way to begin conversations about their day at school!
Writing:
We are beginning to discuss sentences and the importance of specific words when saying or writing a sentence. We have learnt that using silly words in the middle of a sentence, will cause it to not make sense. And if we don't say sentences that make sense, it will be trickier to write and read sentences. We are also learning the difference between a word, letter and sentence.
Reading:
In reading we have a weekly mentor text. We read this text each day exploring different parts of the text. This week, we have started to learn about narratives. Our mentor text this week has been ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We are learning that every narrative has characters, a setting, a problem and a solution. When reading a story with your child, you can discuss the characters, setting , problem and solution. This is a great way to strengthen their comprehension skills.
Leader In me:
This week's focus habit is Habit 4: Think Win-win. We encourage the students to think about themselves and others when playing or communicating with one another. If we both feel happy, safe and welcomed at school, then that is a win-win situation!
Inquiry:
This week we started sharing our family photos with the class. It was so great to see each child’s face light up when they got to share the people in their family. We also decorated paper cut outs of ourselves to hang up in our classroom. This represents that we all belong in our school community, and within our families!
