Amazing 5/6

What have we been up to?

Halfway through the term already and the students are beginning to finish their first units of work. They have created stories about being left behind at Woorabinda camp, having to survive the whole weekend until the camp opens again on Monday. They have just finished their first lot of group work and testing for maths on the topic of Place Value and it was pleasing to see the growth and results these groups have achieved. The students dived into their spelling program, Morpheme Magic and the improvement in their prefix and suffix knowledge has grown as well.

I want to congratulate all the students on their first couple of weeks of homework. Apart from a couple of late arrivals, everyone got their homework in on time and the standard was excellent. Please continue to support your student with this and Homework Club is every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4pm. It is free and parents do not have to attend.

Interschool sports has also been a huge success and the level of ability has only been exceeded by the sportsmanship shown. The Girls tee-ball is undefeated, the cricket team is improving, the girls volleyball has had their first win and the tennis team is getting better with every match. Please remember that your child will need a hat and a water bottle on Fridays.

Looking forward in our learning:

NAPLAN

The Year 5’s NAPLAN schedule is the following:

Wednesday morning - Writing

Wednesday afternoon - Reading

Thursday afternoon - Language Conventions

Monday morning - Maths

Morpheme Magic:

The focus of the coming weeks is the suffixes -ed and -ing. This will include how to use them to describe tense and actions in our writing.

Literacy:

In literacy we are drafting, editing and publishing our narratives about being stuck at Camp Woorabinda. We will then focus on a piece of free writing and how our experiences and emotions help us create interesting and detailed stories.

Maths:

We will be shifting into one of our short units on time, specifically understanding 24 hour time, using and creating schedules and timetables and planning activities based around a schedule.

From the Students:

This week in literacy we have been writing narratives. We identified that there are 5 parts to narratives: The beginning, the build-up, the problem, the resolution and the ending. Also in literacy during Morpheme Magic, we have been learning about different prefixes and suffixes and how they can change the meaning of words.

This week in maths groups we have been focussing on rounding and converting decimals. This term in maths we have been learning about prime, composite, square and triangular numbers.

During ‘Leader In Me’ we learnt about having a growth mindset, which means that when you think positively you can achieve your goals. If you think negatively then your outcomes will be negative too.

This week in health we learnt about big emotions, both positive and negative, and how they can affect us.

This term in art, the 5/6s are focussing on African animals for the Art Show. This week we drew pictures of different African animals using various art supplies.

This week in music, the 5/6s have been working on their performances for the Talent Show. We will be performing for the younger year levels and we are very excited about this project.

Last week in inter-school sports we played Kingston Heath. We had lots of fun and showed good sportsmanship during all the games.
