Routines, routines…ROUTINES!
We are so incredibly proud of the start our Foundies have had to big school. After two tiring half days last week, we have seen our students take to their first full week of school like ducks to water.
Each classroom has worked hard at establishing routines and procedures that aim to make the days run more smoothly as they are predictable and run like clockwork. We have focused on our learning goals in Literacy of being able to set up for Reading and Writing lessons by having the correct learning tools organised before we start our sessions. Routines in the classroom are not only visible in our lessons, but also in how we transition between tasks or get ready for lunch.
Lining up in roll order has been a big routine for our Foundies to learn, as they get to know the names and faces of the other children in their class. We practise this each time we leave the classroom, as we enter the building at the start or each day and as we leave when we say goodbye.
As the year goes on, these routines will become second nature to our students allowing them to focus more greatly on becoming the best learners they can!
Sizzling Sausages!
This week in Foundation we conducted our very first science experiment! We began by discussing what we think Science is and what we thought a Scientist does as a job. We then learnt that conducting an experiment always begins with asking a question.
We thought we would explore the question ‘how can we be more sun smart on hot days?’
Our Foundies began their experiment by guessing what they thought may happen to some sausages left out in the sun. One sausage had sunscreen applied, one was wearing an umbrella hat, another was left in the shade and the last was wearing a hat.
As a cohort we came together to conduct the experiment and discuss our predictions about what will happen. A lot of our Foundies thought each sausage would sizzle in the hot sun!
After a few hours in the scorching sun, we brought our sizzling sausages inside to examine the results. We noticed that three of our four sausages came back cooked! We found that to be sun smart, we should all have sunscreen applied as this sausage was the least cooked. Some observant Foundies had further questions, wondering whether a sausage that had sunscreen, a hat and was in the shade would be the most sun smart of them all!
What a fun way to kick off our year of science experiments! We can't wait for our next one.

Year 5/6 students completing an Engineering Challenge. Creating Paper Towers in STEM. It had to be strong enough to hold a 400g can of food and stand for at least one minute. They were judged on the height of their tower and the strength of their tower.
Newport Lakes P.S is very proud of Isla C in Yr 5/6 on her amazing achievements in tennis. In 2023, Isla was selected to take part in the Super 10s - a select entry tennis program for the best 10-year old tennis players in the state! Because of her outstanding efforts in the Super 10s program, Isla was selected to feature in the 2024 Australian Open.
On Monday 22nd, I got to have a hit of tennis on Kia Arena before the pros during the Australian Open. Then, I got to toss the coin before the Ladies Doubles Match. It was so cool and I even got my face on the big screen for everyone to see. I got to see behind the scenes at Kia Arena which was a great experience, but mostly concrete! I also got to see lots of professional tennis players just walking around. We stayed to watch some of the tennis on the outside courts and as a thank you I got to take home a signed tennis ball. - Isla
