Year 6 Spotlight

Reflecting on the School Values & Learning

Below are a few student reflections on what's being happening in the classrooms – across the curriculum as well as an exploration of our school values.

Our Values – Respect, Creativity, Excellence, Community

On our first day of Year 6, our new teacher Daniel reminded us of the four school values. We did a lot of different activities around the school values. When we needed to draw or write an example of respect we also had to think of ways to understand how a community could work and help out everyone.

The next value we learned was excellence. We had to do a big poster about our idols and how they show excellence and how they become excellent, it was really fun getting to research our idols.

Now for creativity, we drew a portrait, one side being the outside of our minds and the other side, all the fun creative things that go on inside our minds, it was really fun and we loved drawing the portraits. That’s all that we learned during the first few weeks, all in all we loved learning about our schools four values.

At the start of the year, we all revised the four values for FPS. These values are the heart of the school. They are respect, community, creativity and excellence. Values that are important in our everyday lives. These values are what make our school FPS.

In Year 6, we each made a respect poster, for how we would show respect for the year, and a creativity poster where we thought hard about what we are as people by drawing a self-portrait – half normal, and half showing what makes us ourselves.

For an excellence poster, we showed who we think shows excellence, or, as Anneliese joked, the ‘Taylor Swift wall’. Yes, Tay Tay is so amazing that many people in our class did it on her (we’re guilty too!).

Add in the community work we did, which involved choosing a word that we associate with the community and then making a poster about it, and we have covered them all!

And as we said before, these values are the heart of our school, so we always need to remember their importance.

Learning Reflections – Debating, Citizenship, States of Matter & More!

In Year 6, so far we have already done a lot! In writing we are talking about debating. We are watching videos on it and rating them based on their structure, debating language/ phrases, how persuasive they were, and their presentation skills.

In reading we have started Lit Circles and have been practising our reading comprehension skills with our independent reading books. In maths we have started to do our groups. We have also been practising factors and multiples.

In inquiry we are learning about Australian citizenships and are getting Paul in to talk to us as he became a citizen after living in England! In interschool sports we are practising all our sports for the Gala Day that we have closer to the end of this term.

The last few weeks have been an emotional roller-coaster of excitement and new experiences. Like starting debating, setting up for Harmony Day, learning about prime numbers, and the leadership roles have been going great.

In PE we’ve been trying heaps of new sports, and in our new subject STEM we have been studying all the matters like gas, liquid, and solids. We have been doing interschool sports this term and our sports are basketball, rounders, softball and cricket.
