Year 3 Spotlight

A Wonderful Start

Year 3 students and teachers have all had a wonderful start to the year. Students are getting to know each other and their new classes and making some lovely friendships. As always the beginning of the school year is very busy and, and in Year 3 there is plenty to comment on.

Students have been learning about spelling through a program called Sound Waves, as well as exploring problem solving and place value in maths, and learning about persuasive writing. In reading we are exploring different genres and in Inquiry, we are learning about Geography. Later this week, the classes are heading to Darebin Parklands to explore the geographical features of our local area.

Resilience

This term, students are undertaking a Resilience Incursion facilitated by Kate Wilde from The Workshop (www.theworkshop.org.au).

Students are participating in two lessons where they are learning to develop skills around problem solving, assertive communication and resilience. They are learning to recognise positive problem solving characteristics using the labels Crocodile, Mouse, Fox, Hyena and Dolphin.

In the coming weeks, we are running a family forum session where families will explore communication, independence, and managing the challenges of technology.

Today, students participated in the first session of their Resilience incursion. They have enjoyed the session very much and have had some great reflections on their learning:

  • Our behaviour can be like how an animal acts and that sometimes we don’t realise our behaviour. Crocodile behaviour can be a problem. ~ Bonnie R
  • Resilience is very good. ~ Rosie G
  • It was really fun learning about resilience. I liked learning about the animal behaviours. ~ Heide TS
  • I really liked how funny Kate was. She explained the crocodile behaviour really well. ~ Elise M
  • I really liked learning about listening and explaining. It showed us how listening and explaining can be really hard. ~ Lola B
  • I liked playing the listening and explaining game. I learnt that listening helps you learn more. ~ Thomas W
  • It was fun. She made learning about resilience really fun. ~ Kit M

Below are some photos of the excursion. The stick activity was about the value of listening and explaining and how challenging this can be.

If talking about resilience is something you would like to do at home, you may like to watch Bluey Season 3, Episode 28 | Stories to springboard a conversation about this.
