AAC / Communication
Did you know that at Hamlyn Views we have an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Action Team where we meet throughout the term to best support our student's voice and communication?
The purpose of our team is to empower students’ communication and voice by increasing AAC accessibility, understanding, and knowledge for all staff and students.
Our central focus this year is to embed AAC in all environments across the school, and students' daily learning, as well as support embedding AAC in our community
This term we have been successful in incorporating Aided Language Displays (ALDs) in every Shared Reading lesson across the school. An ALD is a symbol display on a single page containing relevant vocabulary for a specific activity. Therefore, all mentor texts in the classroom have ALDs to support ALL students to comment on, share opinions, or ask questions about the books we are reading. The level of engagement has immediately increased, not to mention supporting students' comprehension. :)
Are there ways you would like to be involved in supporting AAC in our school community? The AAC Action Team would love to know! Please call the school and let us know if you are interested, or have ideas or comments on AAC at HVS.
Thank you everyone! We look forward to hearing from you.
