The Power of Music

On Monday 12 February, I attended the Year 12 Music Soiree, held in the Duffy Centre. Music has the power to whisk you away from the present and take you on a powerful journey where you are immersed in the stories told by the composers. These stories were then played beautifully by our Year 12 students. Not everyone gets to see or hear our talented musicians and this year’s Year 12 cohort performed so well on the night. Their performances also counted as an assessment task, and it was pleasing to see the students supporting one another and helping each other out. Congratulations to Elijah, Henry, Issac, Domenic, Mathieu, Jesse, Joel, Brooklyn, Christian and William. You all should be immensely proud of yourselves. I would also like to thank our talented music staff, Mr Freere, who teaches the class, as well as Mrs Ovijach, Ms Grape, and Ms Duff who either marked, accompanied, or set up and supported the evening.

I noted that two of these talented musicians, Christian and Joel, are also in my Economics class. It proves that when students are choosing their subjects, that they should choose the subjects they love. Our young men should not be pigeon-holed into being an academic, an athlete, a musician, actor, or artist. Our young men can do it all. They can write essays, play instruments, kick, hit and throw balls, perform on stage, paint, build, and sculpt. It is up to all of us to bring out the best in these young men and let them use the talents that God has given them.
