Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

The Year One students have continued to impress us as we enter the last few weeks of Term One. Throughout this term, students have further developed the attributes of the learner profiles and are becoming more courageous learners every day! We have loved watching all students grow in confidence over the seven weeks we have had together and are looking forward to watching them as they flourish throughout the rest of the school year.

Reading

In Reading, we have been revising what 'nouns' and 'adjectives' are. Students have been working collaboratively to define these terms and have developed posters to share their understanding. We have also started to learn about visualising (creating an image in your mind when listening to or reading a text). Students have been identifying the adjectives within texts that help them form vivid pictures in their minds. These pictures have then been recorded and shared with the class.

Writing

In Writing, we have continued our work on poetry and further developing beginning writing behaviours. Students have been given opportunities to use their Writer's Notebook to create seeds (ideas). For our inspiration this week, the Year Ones were encouraged to visualise a rainy day and think about what they might see or do both inside and outside. They then were encouraged to write about their images using a provided structure, attempting to stir a reader's imagination or emotions through the use of descriptive language.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have started our unit on Place Value. Students have been developing their foundational Maths skills through the use of hands-on materials such as unifix cubes, popsicle sticks, and MAB blocks. Our main focus this week has been on breaking down two-digit numbers and understanding that 10 ones is the same as 1 ten. Place Value understanding is crucial to accurately read, order, and represent numbers. It also helps students when learning many other mathematical concepts.

Please enjoy some students from 1I discussing their understanding of place value.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we have continued to explore our Central Idea 'Identifying and understanding emotions help us to regulate our behaviour'. Our learning this week has been focused on our second line of Inquiry into the strategies we can use to help us express ourselves. Students have read the mentor texts 'When I'm Feeling Angry' and 'When I'm Feeling Sad' by Trace Moloney and have then discussed what these emotions might look like and feel like. They then shared examples of potential triggers or scenarios that could elicit these emotions and identified different strategies they could use to help themselves feel better or return to 'The Green Zone'.

Woof Day

We would like to send out a big thank you to all families who donated to the Story Dogs initiative through Woof Day on Friday the 8th of  March. It was great to see everyone band together to support this incredible organisation. The students in Year One absolutely adored meeting Dora, one of the Story Dogs, who students they were introduced to and allowed to pat.
